"It's interesting to see how the expert farmers interact with the plants. For example, there was a purple mutation that occurred in one of the expert farmer's fields. He was very curious about it. He took the seeds and grew it off in a corner because he wanted to see what it looked like and tasted like. That's probably how humans domesticated plants, smart people were making smart choices in what to plant and grow," Schaal said.

:clap Yes!!

Know what's worse? When they DO know and still won't take the first step to changing it.
A friend who works at a movie store called me to say "You have to watch Food, Inc. I watched it last night and it's life changing! I've got it reserved for you, just stop by after work" I had been waiting for it to come out so I was glad he reserved it. Buuuuut...

Several weeks later, I go to his house and nothing... I repeat nothing has changed in his fridge or cabinets. Still no fresh veggies, tons of processed foods & the CO2 packaged meats. Um, life-altering how exactly? *sigh*

There is an anti-monsanto group on Facebook: Here This one is French

From that Facebook page (where I became a fan), I grabbed this quote:

"Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of 'bio-tech' food," said Phil Angell, Monsanto's director of corporate communications. "Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA's job."
Chilling, and telling.

especially since the FDA and USDA have almost no actual authority to regulate things. i mean, the USDA can't recall tainted meat? the FDA can't (or won't) stop BigAg and BigPharma from fast-tracking everything without sufficient testing...

Cool site. I just put in an order at baker creek (www.rareseeds.com), but I will check out the new site and see if they have anything different I need all of a sudden.

I ordered...
Collective Farm Woman melons
Wild Strawberries
Red Chinese Noodle Beans
Dragon Tongue Beans
Black Cherry Tomatoes
and Charentias melon (I really wanted blacktail mountain melons, but they were out)

Before most of the public was aware of genetically engineered food, I have written a lengthy protest GMO letter to the Secretary of Agriculture, Dan Glickman. I received no response, not even an acknowledgment of my correspondence. I got the impression from this that it was already a backroom done deal in 1995.

Don't be too hard on him. I don't think most people have the slightest idea HOW to make the changes they know they need to make.

Encourage them with simple changes first. Buy frozen veggies instead of canned. While they are still not fresh organic they have more nutrition in them and less additives. Go over to your friends house with some containers and a couple of big recipes. Teach them how to make good meals that freeze for later use as lunches or quick meals.

Give them a big potted tomato as a gift this spring. Or a patio pot full of "salad".

We got to lead them by the hand and teach them HOW to change. At first it takes some pulling then they become like a self propelled steam roller! :thumbsup

This is so true. I am trying to figure out how I can get some of the young women in my congregation over for some basic cooking lessons. I think some of them would really like it. I also had a big demand from my last teleconference class for some live cooking classes. Still can't figure out how I will do it....my kitchen is pretty small. When I cook, I really need to be in there alone or with just one helpful person who can stay out of my way....I do most things at high speed!
