Yeah, I was reading how Salatin figures out how much minerals and salts his cattle needed and it seemed so easy. He offers brown kelp and coarse salt free choice and the cattle regulate their own needs. Sometimes they really eat the kelp, other times leave it alone. Says he hasn't had one case of pink eye since he started using kelp for the mineral supplement.

I can't even find it around here!

I figure its the same with a person's flock...offer a healthy choice and see what they utilize~which I'm sure will fluctuate with their changing needs.

Well here's what I'm offereing the birds...it's just a mixture of everything and we'll see what they eat the most of so i can come up with a formula later:>)

These all came in a pigeon feed mix...when I saw it my mind started to reel because it looked so GOOD AND NATURAL in comaprison to lay pellets! (and the hens love it!

yellow corn
red corn
hard red wheat
white milo
hull less oats
safflower seed
canola seed
red milo
white millet
red millet
maple peas
trapper peas
green peas
buckwheat
brown rice

To this I added black oil sunflower seeds and barley...I am also incorporating some of their layer pellets in for now just to use them up.
and of course I have to have grit and oyster shell available now as well.

Any words of wisdom?? Am I missing anything that would be considered important?

Well, here's a pic of the damage that cold front did on my poor roo. He is still alive and eating and drinking normally...so who knows how this will go. It wasn't that bad when I brought him in the house...I guess the heat brought it out. He is back in the shed now with a heatlamp and separated from the other hens. I did put the silkies in with him for comfort and heat though...they could use some heat...we're going back down to -36C this weekend.

Menawhile...my sewing machine came in yesterday! WHOOOO HOOO! So today I was fooling around with it and doing machine applique for the first time with some scap material I have so the colors aren't great....(up until now I did applique by hand). Here's a pic of what I've done in about two hours...including all the cutting and everything. Wow it is faster to machine applique...not very good at it yet but will improve with practice. It says "The rooster might crow but the Hen delivers the goods..."

Wow the pic I uploaded of the roo actually looks like there's some gangerine in there. It doesn't look like that for real, but now I am going to double check him with a bright light...maybe the flash helped bring it out...Wow, never noticed that until now and I had a good look at him that day (pic was taken two days ago)

The machine applique looks good for a first attempt!

Poor roo! The boys sure have it rough when winter gets ugly!
