Hubby and the kids have been out on Lake St. Clair twice so far. We had perch two days ago, and more tomorrow. I need more fish crisp! :D

When we lived up north, we used to go up the line and fish on a lake, start a shore fire and have a blast on the snowmachines all day.

You can't pay me enough money to go ice fishing here--its too cold, if that makes sense. it could be -35 up there and we'd be fine. Yesterday it was -12 plus wind chill. It was brutal.

This is hubby's shanty, he pulls it behind his quad, when the ice is thick enough. I believe its 6-7 inches right now.

I find the further north you go the less brutal the cold is for some reason...up towards Timmins -35 is so dry that as long as you have your undies tightened you're good to go! I find here it is a very damp cold, and -35 is totally bonebreaking! It is probably a damp cold where you are at too...or maybe we're just getting older... :D

Cool shantie...the only problem is...where's teh woodstove fit? LOL! I really need a woodstove. We haven't actually icefished in over 5 years. We used to have a great ice shack but for some reason we stopped. I think we were too far from this lake and our lake was very poor fishing.
I would love fish for dinner right bout now :drool

Yeah, if there was a woodstove I might consider it. (not really). :p Hubs has a little propane thingy that he uses. that shanty is only a three seater, so no room for me even if I wanted to go.

man, we've all been missing the north lately. We got no snow well, a light dusting. A frind who works with hubs, who is from timmins originally, just bought a cottage in Thessalon. We are going up sometime this winter, but I think that will just make it worse.

Well, one thing I do believe...if it's gonna be cold then there better be snow! cold without snow just makes it an insult, doesn't it? Take the break and go to the cottage...you'll love it!

See THAT is something I will NEVER understand. How can you all MISS the north. :sick

I have had WAY too much cold already and I live in Missouri. My Grandma Nettie was one of you. She LOVED ice and snow. Blizzard a comin'? She wanted to be in the car going for a drive!! I will never, never understand. :hu

Still glad you are happy living up there - I guess somebody has to. :gig

For me...it is more like making the best of it...but at the same time I think I would really miss the seasons if I didn't have them. I would LOVE the summers to be longer though!

Morel - Cold without snow is an insult - Great phrase.

Now I know why my Mississippi winters are so miserable. I am insulted all winter long.

Makes me feel much more justified in feeling like I do.

I just can't imagine being anywhere that the temperature is -35! I can't even wrap my brain around that. I do think it would be cool to try icefishing though! I just can't imagine having a woodstove on top of ice.....that is a hoot!

I grew up in SW Ont. and I hated winter. so when hubby said he had a job interview up north, I thought--WHAT?!?!?! Are you crazy?!?!?!? We went up for his interview in February, when there was life 5 ft of snow on the ground. We were up for a coupla days, and when the skies were blue, it was really cold, but if you dressed proper (boots coat glove and a hat) you were fine, and I mean comfortable. The days when the sky was grey, it was milder out and always snowing!!! So gray days were beautiful, and sunny days were beautiful.

We moved there , and thats pretty much how it was. Plus there are soo many things you can do in the winter there than you can do here--case in point-ice fishing. I would not go out here, b/c it is too cold at -12 C, but-40 up north,, and I would go.
It's hard to explain the temp thing unless you've experienced it.

Not to mention the lifestyle of the north. If you are into hunting fishing, outdoor sports like skiing, snowmobiling, icefishing, quadding, swimming, hiking, wild foraging, etc etc, there is no place on earth you would be happier than up north.

We used to go out on the quads with the kids, pack a lunch and some drinks and be gone all day, -not seeing one other living person, but lotsa wildlife, and nature. It was beautiful and I miss it.

But like I said, you would have to experience it to know what I am talking about.
