Yes, that was one BIG thud...never had any bird that big hit my window before. It hit so hard that it's crop actually exploded...at first I couldn't figure out why it had clover and cedar berries all caught in the feathers under it's neck...On closer inspection I figured out it had a hole in it's crop and thought that maybe it had been shot before it hit the window, but no, it was just exploded!

Well I have been doing really good about staying away from the computer, and then it broke down so right now I am using dh's laptop...he hates it when I use his computer and I hate his keyboard so this will be short and sweet...
DH is talking about leaving our country home and building a house in town! I sure hope he's just talking...especially at times like these when country living is where you want to be! My self sufficient dreams will be out the window...after all the work I did getting here! We'll see...it's probably talk, but he says he is getting too old to be doing the wood anymore, and he wants our son to be able to get a job in the next couple of years. Not only that but rumour has it that our property taxes are about to go through the roof. I'm trying to get info on that but haven't found anything concrete so far...they can't do that during a recession can they? People here are losing thier jobs left right and center. Alot of homes will be going up for sale around here soon. \the goodthing about moving is that we can be mortgage free in a brand new house...well, at least if we get a house built I can maybe swing a double lot and a secret 'cold room/storage area somewhere in it:>)

I can't imagine the feeling you must have in the pit of your stomach. But, I guess you have to do what's best for the whole family.

Although, in town you could still do some of the SS things, just on a smaller scale. Mortgage free does sound good.

Once, we vacationed on Tybee Island. Their taxes went sky high, too. The house we rented was their 1rst home. They rented it during season to vacationers to pay the taxes and mortgage on it. They lived in their parent's home (deceased) in the off season. With your home as beautiful as it is, that's just a thought that came to me.

I know you would be disappointed to have to move now. All that work and all those plans. As for the taxes I don't know. Around here the local governing leaders vote on tax increases. If it is a major increase "we the people" actually get to vote on it. But in truth, "THEY" can pretty much do as they please and then tell us how its going to be.
And with all the foreclosures you have to know that the tax base has dropped. That is probably why they are talking increase.
Mortgage Free sounds good. At least then all your extra money can go to taxes.

And where, pray tell, does that leave Sam and I? Oh, and 2dream, also! No guest house living? :idunno With Sam? :hit

How bout turning your guest house into a country retreat, sort of a B&B thing to defray the cost of your property taxes? Let them gather eggs and milk your new goat~note to Morel: get a goat~(if they would like to learn), provide fresh cut flowers and herbs in the house, along with homemade herbal soaps, lotions, and a miniature hand painted picture(signed by the artist, of course) as gift basket items, fresh butter, eggs and venison in the fridge, goat's milk cheese along with your fresh gourmet bread.

Hand stitched linens and quilts on the beds, add a jacuzzi or hot tub to the place, attention to detail geared towards comfort and handmade charm. Open a web page and advertise for it.....I bet you would be booked year round!

OR....make it into an art studio/gift shop and offer art classes to beginners and have open houses to showcase yours and other's art.

I can't bear the thought of your living in town when you live in Paradise right now! :(

Very nice. I love the colors. It does not look all that simple....
They call that applique also, correct? It can get quite intricate and extremely beautiful.
I made a small one for my grandaughter, it had bugs on it, she is not a-skeered of bugs that is for sure, lol.
