I'll be busy while he is doing the butchering. He knows me well enough to say I should go to town for that day. When he tells me to go shopping- I tell him "your wish is my command".
Goats have so much personality and they're beautiful :love but the cheese is why I really want them. It's super expensive here, and I can put away some cheese. I'll be happy to milk them with visions of ricotta, and feta :drool and yogurt, and mozzarella going through my head.

Bought 20 meaty chicks yesterday at TSC! :weee :ya :celebrate I'm letting a broody raise them for me and they look so very cute~they got a momma!!! Just think....those poor orphans found a loving mom to keep them warm and care for them.

I am so excited to have gotten them for $2 ea. and not having to pay any shipping. $40 is a cheap price to pay for that much meat for the winter! I had always heard about getting chicks at TSC, but had never had a TSC locally until now...how cool!! No shipping and you can actually SEE if they are healthy and active or not.

Last night it was in the 30s here and my broody pen is open air...and the babies were toasty and warm in a bed of White Rock feathers.....I'm very happy! :D No dusty brood box and heat lamp in the living room floor! :celebrate

I love having a momma hen raise my chicks. Sooo much less work. And mom knows just how to keep them at the right temperature. No smelly living room either. Well, unless like me, you bring the momma and the chicks into the house. It was still easier, than a brood box.

We also caved and bought meaties. Cornish x, three for $1.55 each. They are already growing so fast. My Noband is 111g. My lightest is Rightband at 86g. Blackie, our barred rock roo chick is only 62g and is the same age, under the same conditions, lol. We plan to move him out with the layer chicks once they hatch out, so that he's not fighting too hard to get feed.

Momma is simply loving her brood!!! She is so puffed up and busy scratching around for them...you can almost see the pride bursting out of her.

I'm wondering...has anyone ever tried this? Could I wean these meaties at two months and use the same broody for my new chicks in June? Would she still feel maternal and adopt chicks slipped under her in the dead of the night? Or would she attack them the next morning?

Wouldn't that be ideal if it worked?

The hen stopped being broody as soon as she had live chicks. She is now a mother hen.
If you introduce another set to her, she will very likely kill them.
