OK, I'll play.

1) How long have you been interested in self sufficiency? For as long as I can remember. We always had a big garden when I was growing up, my dad always took us fishing, and I can remember going w/my mom looking for berries and grapes.

2) Does your family think you're nuts or are they as crazy as you are? They don't think I'm nuts, but other than my parents, my family isn't really into any of this. My hubby wants me to have a garden, but doesn't support me in my efforts, so I dunno. :hu

3) What is the climate like where you live? 4 Seasons, Zone 7

4) Have you ever had a pedicure? No, but my horse has.

5 Do you prefer cake or pie? Tell you what, give me some of each, and I'll let you know. :hide

6) What book (if any) made you cry? I've cried while reading many books. Parts of the Bible really make me cry, some because of a happy ending (the book of Ruth), others because it makes me sad (parts of the Gospels).

7) What city would you love to see someday? I don't like cities. I'm like ICU, the only city I'm excited to even THINK about seeing is Heaven, or more specifically, the New Jerusalem. I would, however like to see the country of New Zealand.

8) What are you most excited about growing? Raspberries! I don't know where they came from, but I have a bunch of them in my yard! I just need to figure out where I can move them to, they're not in a good spot. :/

9) Do you believe in God? Absolutely, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

10) What's the best thing you've learned in your adventure of simpler living? Less is more. By that I mean, the less you have cluttering up your life, including material possessions, the more you have of real value, if that makes any sense.

1) How long have you been interested in self suffiency? Consciously, for 3-4 years, but on reflection there's always been a bit of it there. My granpa had a HUGE garden and gave me an appreciation for homegrown food. My dad was big into Mother Earth News and SS in the 70s when I was preteen/teen and it must have made an impression.
2) Does your family think you're nuts or are they as crazy as you are? Some of them get it even if they aren't into a deep as a I am. I have acquaintences who thing I'm nuts!
3) What is the climate like where you live? 4 seasons, sometimes in the same week! Last Thursday it was 98, the next day it barely got to 64....
4) Have you ever had a pedicure? Twice, when I had a broken arm and wouldn't let DH cut my toe nails for me. Haven't had one since.
5 Do you prefer cake or pie?Hmmm, tough one since going gluten free. Probably pie.
6) What book (if any) made you cry? Lots and lots of them. I cry easily over books. One of the first I remember is Little House on the Prairie when Pa almost shoots Jack. And Anne of Green Gables, including Rilla of Ingleside about Anne's youngest daughter. OMG, I am in tears just thinking about that book. I tend to avoid books that I know are going to make me cry.
7) What city would you love to see someday? Bunches of them but only to visit. St Petersburg, Russia, Amsterdam, Florence (an ancestor of DH's was mayor)
8) What are you most excited about growing? Currently I'm just so excited that I have a veggie garden!!! Or does angora rabbit fiber count?
9) Do you believe in God? Yes
10) What's the best thing you've learned in your adventure of simpler living? That I like myself better when I'm true to what I believe is right. This is something I've been spending some time with, thinking about. It's tough to explain.
:D

Great list. Interesting responses so far. Here are mine:

1. Not sure -- forever in a way, but really hands on in the last few years.
2. My family thinks I'm nuts. But they are nice about it.
3. The climate here is warm and dry. We have seasons like "fire season" and "June gloom." It almost never freezes.
4. I have had a few pedicures. I can take 'em or leave 'em.
5. Pie rocks.
6. Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech is a kids' book, but it has a powerful ending that made me bawl!
7. I would love to see more of southern France and Italy. Or live out DH's dream of ditching the homestead for a while and living on a sailboat in the Caribbean, and see whatever cities we see.
8. This year a near-stranger gave me a mortgage-lifter tomato, which I thought was cool because (1) there's a story behind it and (2) it was from a random woman who happened to knock on my door and we ended up talking gardening. I love unexpected discoveries.
9. Not in the traditional sense.
10. That relying on myself and my friends, neighbors, and community is far more rewarding and fulfilling than relying on faceless corporations.

1) I grew up a tomboy, learning some skills. Not interested in barbies. It made me feel capable, which was nice. 20's -SCA, camping, and periods of poverty made me learn more about handy low tech skills. Grateful for that.
Being home through Fla Hurricanes Charlie, Frances, and Jean, in the last 10 years, taught me that cities don't always have power, safe water, or supplies. Grocery stores sold out of the important stuff. I got practice at cutting up downed trees too.
2) My Mom says she's roughing it if a hotel doesn't have room service. My Dad has built his own home in 3 places. One of them was a geodesic dome,(homesteaded back in the 80's) in the desert. Looks like I inherited some of his personality and interests. My Sis would not want to be off grid, but is open minded about most stuff. My friends encourage me about this stuff.
Hubby grew up with country boy skills but drags his heels about giving up the city conveniences now that he got used to them. :he
3) This is Zone 7 for people that garden- and we are in low mountains which probably increases the wind.
Summer days -90's or higher and humid. Nights around 80- from April through September.
Fall - Oct to early Dec, Cooler but nice.
Mid December through Feb- Very windy and rainy. Days in the 40's with nights near freezing. Coldest parts of winter have highs around 18 F and lows around 10 F for a few days in a row. A few ankle deep, snows yearly.
Spring- Windy and indecisive. We can have 80 F in March with frost 2 days later. Last frost in early April.
4) I barely remember to soften up my calluses once in a while. I used to paint my toenails sometimes. A foot rub would be welcome though. I promise to wash them first!
5) Cookies :)
6) Mostly read to learn. Movies can make me teary sometimes.
7) Most of Europe. I love traveling but have done a fair amount, so I would not feel deprived if that was it.
8) Garlic, asparagus and blackberries. Love them but just starting to grow them.
9) I'm into Mother Nature.
10) I am capable of more than I would have guessed.

Yes, they think I try to do too much and tie myself down with animals and such. They think why bother when there are stores and that I should buy organic if I'm so worried about food sources.

1) How long have you been interested in self suffiency?

My entire life... my parents started me on this road by raising pigs, and running a commercial greenhouse full of delicious tomatoes... they are still my favourite food.

2) Does your family think you're nuts or are they as crazy as you are?

My parents are just as nuts as me, my brother thinks I'm insane and it's a waste of time to garden (however he built a raised bed for his wife for Mother's Day)

3) What is the climate like where you live?

Zone 4 (bordering on zone 5) - Four seasons, LOOONGG cold winter with about two months of -20s to -30s (celcius), last frost was two weeks ago... and we've got about 12 weeks until first frost. Summer is wonderful with temps in the 20s and 30s (again celcius).

4) Have you ever had a pedicure?

yep, my sister in law is an aesthetician so she's given me all kinds of stuff for free, it's the only reason I have

5 Do you prefer cake or pie?

Pie, for sure... my favourite is Strawberry-Rhubarb, with pumpkin a close second

6) What book (if any) made you cry?

Black Beauty

7) What city would you love to see someday?

Aberystwyth, Wales... it's where my parents were born and I've never even been to wales.

8) What are you most excited about growing?

Produce: Hot peppers... if I can get a harvest before a frost
Livestock: Icelandic Sheep

9) Do you believe in God?

I'd have to say undecided.

10) What's the best thing you've learned in your adventure of simpler living?

How much work it is to live a simpler life, and how wonderfully satisfying that work can be.
