Hope your leg is easier repaired than mine. Can't afford the surgery nor the time off.

Trying to finish my gluten-free holiday cooking cookbook in time to load it (e-book) to amazon before next week but I'm lagging. Sick tummy all night ... all of a sudden, my aging bod can't handle raw onions. How on earth will I live?!?!?!

It's just us three this year, and we usually don't do anything fancy but here's what I'm doing for next Thursday:

======

Roasting our big ole chicken in the crockpot with butter (smart balance), garlic, and poultry seasoning.

Stuffing with water chestnuts and mushrooms. Usually add lots of raw onion but might have to cook them this year.

Sweet potatoes, sliced, and placed in another crockpot with apples, walnuts, butter and apple pie spice.

Baked potato skins (with cheese, bacon, butter) for my kid who doesn't like typical Thanksgiving-Day foods. He'll also get a plain apple and some plain carrots.

Homemade rolls.

Pecan pie using brown sugar instead of corn syrup (my kid's request)

======

So glad we have a rooster big enough this year. Didn't even occur to us last year to use one of our own chickens. Silly me. Er, us.

OK, that mix of apples and sweet potatoes sounds good. And, what is apple pie spice? I've heard of pumpkin pie spice, but never apple pie spice. More info, please.

McCormick Apple Pie Spice: (ingredient list): cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice

Forgot to add that sometimes I put fresh or dried cranberries in with the sweet potatoes, apples, and walnuts. Along with the butter, apple pie spice, and sometimes brown sugar.

I have to use less sweet potatoes than other ingredients because sp make hubby's tummy upset.

AND easy to make with dried sweet potato slices, dried apple dices, dried cranberries and frozen walnuts. Rehydrate before cooking and adding the rest and this is a great dish.

Enjoy!

For those of you in Colorado, kinda near Denver, I have a couple of bantam blue silkies for sale. Actually look dark grey but have blue earlobes. Both hatched Feb 2011. The boy, who we call Silkie Dude, has curled toes but that doesn't stop him from anything. He has the cutest crow. The girl, Silkie Dudette, is sweet and lays a beautiful creamy-white bantam egg once a week or so. Normal for silkies. Both are sweet.

Right now they are in the garage with a heat-lamp and a light we turn on and off. Were going to butcher him since no one wanted him but couldn't bear to do it. He got lonely so gave him a girlfriend, and now the other bantam chickens don't want her back.

Please take them. Come get them for free.

PM or e-mail me asap.

The neighbor guy who trims our goats' hooves stopped by yesterday. He hurt his back but wanted to let us know he's do what he could as soon as he could. We mentioned that our two girls are due to kid this week and he got soo upset! Said that our babies will die. Need more heat even tho the temps are expected to be high 60 and low 20's this week. Well poo. So as soon as he left, Hubby and I set to working on the garage. Moving things over. Making plans. Got lots moved but still have lots more.

After the kid and I feed the livestock this morning, he and I will finish clearing out one wall. After Hubby gets home from work, we'll move two 6x10 dog kennels from the old goat pen into the garage, on top of heavy duty tarps to contain hay (gotta buy those tarps this morning along with water buckets). Move in a couple of tubs for them to use for birthing: one for each pen. Bring in some cinder blocks and put a bucket for water on top of them (tie it or else it will be spilt everywhere!). Then a bale or two of hay. Then attach heat-lamps (leftover from chick raising) and turn them on. Then the girls. Hopefully do it by midnight tonight.

Good to find this out now. But next year ... the girls will be bred in Oct/Nov/Dec for Spring kidding. Even then, with the unpredictable weather, still will need this set-up in the garage.

Anybody else expecting goat babies this month?

The weather outside is frightful ... really and truly frightful. Our high today is 10 and tonight we're expecting NEGATIVE 6 degrees. Yup, Sub-Zero. The kind where the innards of your nose freeze up.

As soon as I pour water for the outdoor chickens and goats, it starts to slush up. Making an extra trip out there today with warm water. Also, not giving laying feed, just scratch. It lasts in their crops longer so since it takes longer to digest, it'll help keep them warm. No frostbite evident, even on the silkies. Good. Plus they really don't want to get out in the snow, which I think is pretty smart.

Our two girl goats are tucked in the garage, each with a 6x10 dog kennel and 3 chick heat-lamps in between their kennels. By the heat lamps, it registers about 50 degrees. About 10 feet from the lamps, it's 32. They should have kidded almost 2 weeks ago so I'm getting anxious. Installed a baby monitor last night and they had a quiet night. However, about an hour ago, the older started bleating. Constantly. I can hear her pawing too. She's big enough to have 4 (like she has everytime she's kidded) or even 5. The younger doe might have only 2, like last time.

Still, they are anxious. Checked their food, water, hay, heat ... all are ok. No signs of labor. Hope they are ok. And ... COME ONNNN babies!
