Yes, I have read about the wire fencing laid flat, too. Sounds pretty interesting - around here it doesn't take long for something like that to get covered w/ dirt, weeds, grasses, etc. We did lay fencing flat on the ground around the perimeter of our chicken coop and run. Sure was easier than digging to put it under the soil. We don't see it at all but burrowing predators don't get very far.
Renting can be the way to go (no property taxes, less insurance costs, etc). I sure would consider it when we're ready to sell this place. Ask your LL if he owns property out this way.
