Loose leaf lettuce varieties (black seeded simpson is one of my easy favorites) are a quick win, too

One thing you need to be careful of w/planting any type of squash is squash vine borers. They can kill the plant quite quickly.

Kittie, do you live in SO CAL or middle or North? I guess there are micro climates there that will influence what you can grow when. I hope you find lots of good info on SS and TEG forums.

Woah! Yeah, I heard of these pests. Tsktsk

Btw, do you guys recommend spraying pesticides to keep pests away?

Yeah, I'm learning quite a lot just from reading in the different forums that we have here and in TEG.

I lost all of my squash last year to the borers, and so did hubby. He sprayed his, I didn't spray mine. I've heard if you can wait until a certain time in the year, you don't have that problem. And, if you can let chickens into your garden at certain times, they'll eat the bugs. I just might do that, and see if it makes a difference.

I'll try the chicken trick then. sprays cab be quite expensive.
