Yup, might be snow up near you. We're supposed to get 1-2 inches of rain...far outside chance of some sleet or freezing rain mixed in at times. With all that snow melt the past couple of weeks and additional rain we've had, I could hold a mud wrestling contest in my yard.
It's super muddy here too! My driveway is awful, huge ruts. Plowing after this storm might be interesting!
My pigs and the mud... Just gross. They buried their food dish. Awesome. Why is my husband never home when they do disgusting things? Lol
So I'm going to do some thinking/planning about our farm plans. I want to convince my husband that we do not need to breed pigs. I have had pigs here for a year straight now and I've realized that doing 2 feeder pigs and having the rest of the year pig-free is much better for me. Until he's home all the time with me... It's too much. So, I'm thinking we may need to expand our turkey breeding program and check out the market for heritage turkeys. We have processing equipment, and if we invest in good breeding stock we can also sell hatching eggs and breeding trios. He loves those darn things and they're easier (And less smelly) than pigs so I'm going to push for it!
Also I'll be playing around with soaps and look into selling soaps and lotions online (once I get more comfortable with it) to help with hay costs, etc.
I am waiting for my paperwork from the state for claiming my farm name. I was rejected the first time. Apparently you actually have to sign where it says "sign here"... My husband told me I'm so good at filling out paperwork I should probably return my Masters degree. Thanks for the support dude! Lol!
We are very happy with our feeder pigs. I don't want to be a pig breeder, it's too easy to raise them for so many months, take them to slaughter and get them back frozen in clear vacuumed packages.
We butcher them ourselves but yes, easier and cheaper to not breed them. I love my goats, he loves his birds... I think it's tempting to want to do it all, but not practical. Plus it's good to support local heritage pig breeders by buying from them. Maybe they'll support us in return!
