I've been strictly 'no poo' for over a year now.

I have often battled a dry scalp, but without using shampoo it has gotten much better. I originally started using the BS and ACV method and did that for about half a year, then in the summer it started getting too harsh on my hair, so I started using a hand bar of my homemade goat milk soap.

Now I alternate between the two, but instead of ACV I use unpalatable Kombucha. It works well, and I like to think my hair is nice =P

What counts as unpalatable kombucha? Would that be say, the batch that I forgot in my cupboard almost 2 months ago now? All the sugars would be gone now, so it'd be about like using vinegar, right?

Hehe, yes I would say so! :p

Mine turns unpalatable (for my tastes) at about 20 days or so. Maybe I'm just a wimp when it comes to my drinks? Considering I wasn't the one sending messages after that vodka last night, was I? ;)

In the spring, fall and winter the once a week with a tiny dab of shampoo and plenty of hot water is all I need for my hair to fluff and head to smell great. I DO shower more often that that however usually at LEAST every other day with my homemade soap which is VERY mild. I am also using the alum crystal type of deodorant.

In the summer with so much more sweating going on I often step in the shower and "wash off" several times a day, but not all of them with soap. My hair during the summer requires a bit more soaping as well, just depending on the week. I try to use only hot water as often as possible as well as a loofa on my body at least a couple of times a week.

In summer I usually use my long hair as a cooling radiator. I pile my hair up on my head and run cold water all over my head then allow the breeze and natural evaporation of the water to keep me cool while I work. If you count that as "washing my hair", it sometimes happens three or four times a day in summer. :D

edited to say: I also take several vinegar "baths" a week in the summer. Not baths per say, but I take a paper towel soak it with cheap ACV and cover all exposed skin with it. I find that works great as a skin conditioner AND (the reason I do it) as a natural mosquito repellent. Apparently mosquitoes don't appreciate their people "pickled". :p

When my hair was long, I only washed it once every.... 3 to 5 days, depending. Now that it's short I'm finding I've had to wash it more often. I might give soap and vinegar a try again now. I used dr. bronner's when camping. It can be used for ANYTHING. Hair, skin, dishes, laundry, teeth (yes, teeth, and no, it doesn't taste that bad, especially the peppermint), etc.

Oh sure, spread vicious rumors and slander my image, I see how this goes. :D

in the summer, i might get into the actual shower once every two weeks... instead, i have a good swim in the lake at the end of each day (which also counts as my work-out). since any soaps or poos i'm using are completely safe, i'll just lather up before i get out. ahh the beauty of having God's bathtub in my backyard!

I am also using the alum crystal type of deodorant.
how is that working for you? a friend uses it and likes it, but i've not tried it yet. i've been using Tom's deodorant for a while (when i use it at all), but it doesn't seem to keep me fresh all that long if i'm doing more than light work.

you have no idea how much i was cringing at opening this post... i thought well it was about well.. NOT shampoo

;-)

for the record i've been off soap for a long long long time... i read something about a million years ago about how your skin is your body's largest organ and why would you soap it all up all the time, would you take your liver out and wash it? (well.. i might to scrub the tequila worms out but thats it).

so it takes a while to go thru soap and "poo" around here. but i just buy the cheap stuff and dont really use a lot. mostly just warm water and no i dont shower and wash my hair every day.

and yes i get a lot of teasing about this.. but what they dont know is that the zombie bikers will be able to hunt folks down b/c of the soap smell so i'm safe.

:)

My original one, that was like at least 10 years old, just broke, (ds knocked over) so I had to buy another one. i love it, just a tip to wet your pits and then apply, do not wet the crystal, or water will run down your sides. NOT enjoyable. I have everyone in my house using the crystal now.

As for the no 'poo, I do use shampoo, but I use it to wash my body also. i just lather up my head, and using the suds from my head, work my way down. Hubby and I share a shower, and a $10 bottle of shampoo will last us a minimum of 6 months.

Oh, I have a tip for armpit-scrubbery!

In the summertime, I scrub my feet and armpits with iodine surgical scrub. It's the bacteria on your skin that make you reek!
I got this trick from my dad, he said it allowed him to hike the Pacific Rim trail with friends without them all killing each other with stink.
I also use baking soda on the pits sometimes too.

Note: DO NOT use the iodine scrub for your nether regions. You might absorb too much, and it might...burn.

So I gave up shampoo last week. I was tired of the greasy hair after I just washed it the day before and I hope this solves my woes!
I did 2 bc/wv washes this week and yesterday I got at least 8 complements on my hair which is really unusual. It was also really funny to say to people. "Hmmm, maybe it's because I haven't used shampoo for 7 days" And watching the look of amazement and horror on their faces.

I think I'll be doing it for my kids too (even though I only use shampoo on them every couple weeks anyways) They do get a bath every couple days, I just don't wash their hair.

So anyhow, I'm really please with it so far. I hope I can stick with it. Even if I don't I'll never go back to a shampoo that has SLS in it.
