the only good pig is one thats in the pan
Im with you there! We had four in a pen,..maybe 40lbs,..just got them. They were sick, had the sniffles :sick,..thats another story,..but we had to go 'doctor" these varmits once a week or so. We gave them injections of antibiotics,,....and let me tell you,..don't ever underestimate a pig,..small ones or otherwise. They are he!! on wheels :ep! I tackled one thinking I was better than it,...I found out how honery those creatures can be! Needless to say that cute little piggie won. :bow Later when we downsized to just two,..one decided he was coming on up to the house for a visit,..I had to tackle him to put him back,..that in no way was easy. I had a rope around his neck and he was a squealing to beat the band,..well the other pig that was still in the lot didn't like that. She thought I was hurting her friend. I put him back in the pen and had to flat out run,..and run for my life! That other pig was coming for me and she was going to eat me up,..she was peed off! :somad  Its all funny now,..but it was a scary moment for me! Can't wait till spring to get two more! They are so much fun! And they taste sooooo GOOD! Mmmmm,...sausage! :drool

great googley moogley its cold out there! its like... snot freezing cold. its so cold we arent going to church - and that is saying something! right now it somewhere between 4* and 7* but our wind chills are much lower.

we made the rounds and gave everyone feed (lots of corn to heat everyone up) and warm (not hot) water. but we arent letting any of the critters out....and even tho the dogs think this is the best thing ever.... they will be hanging out with us today. inside.

the news keeps saying this is way colder than normal - generally we get a couple really really cold days but this week's forecast is all below 20* for the high!

so nothing but holding down the couch and watching movies.

how cold it is where you are??

we're not supposed to get above freezing for the next week. Brrr.... Times like this I'm thankful the only livestock I have to worry about are the chickens, chicks, and dogs.

silly girl!

i remember that once i nearly froze to death when my Left Coast house got cold. we all nearly died. it hit 60* the horror... the horror......

well Round Two in the Snot Freezing Cold.

its still cold. but we are up to a sizzling 8*! still below 0* with the wind... and the extended the wind chill advisory. i feel better about staying home... the ducks had to be shuffled back in... they were coated with ice from bathing. so they got new water too... and i let the hens out. the geese are reclining in the snow and wondering what the fuss is all about.

Free - if you are out there -- i'm heading downstairs with a bunch of those little punkins to set them a-boil on the wood stove. i'm SO GLAD you suggested that! just the ticket to keep the hens busy and well fed

:)

You boiling pumpkins or roasting?

I have one sitting in my kitchen that I have been meaning to cook up for the girls.....bt since the idiot at the feed store told me that I probably killed little Kelly by giving them too much (other than feed) food I have been a little gun shy about giving them scraps.

I think I need to just get over it because I know he was wrong...but I still have that little twinge of guilt and worry.

are you so kidding?? i'm not sure there is 'too much' scraps as long as they are not yucky - do they free range?? if yes mostly they will feed themselves... chickies are smart - they will eat what they need if left to their own devises. but remember our motto is ' get out there and free range cuz its free!'

i think i got 2 dozen eggs yesterday. i'm trying to shut these girls down!

Free suggested to just put a (heavy) pot of water on the wood stove (its roaring down there) and let the punkins simmer until soft. this helps a couple of things - first, the stove has a fire anyway - why heat up the stove? next, it will warm/rehydrate our oh-so-dry air, and it softens the pumkins - these technically are gourds so they are hard and the hens can as easily peck them apart. when they are soft and mushy they can get at the seeds and such.

ummmm, OHG, am waiting here for it to get to 7 or so before I let the chickens out! (was -23 this am, but we're heading for maybe a high of 9 above) funny how it is so relative!

the birds look like fat little puffballs at the feeders, round as heck.

Your posts made me almost want to get pigs!
