Rub those little combs and wattles with petroleum jelly. It will really help stave off frostbite.

Also remember that steamy water in a coop is adding moisture and moisture in the air is what REALLY causes frostbite.

OFG - just caught up reading your journal - you are a great storyteller. I can close my eyes (after laughing uncontrollably (?sp) and just see everything happening to you. You gotta write the story.... Future homesteaders would flock to your book-signings (oops! back to the city).
:th

I'm waiting for more! :caf

Oh, and congrats on the camo muck boots! I decided this last spring I needed rubber boots because it rained and rained and rained. I wear them every day! From the chicken pen to the mailbox every morning to get the paper back to the chicken pen - hate taking them off in the house.

so we got our hams back! now its all ham all the time and we are LOVING IT!

i updated the hog post - but just to say again, if you are interested, we ended up with 78 pounds of ham. is that a dream within a dream or WHAT?

we saved money by NOT having the shop slice and wrap the hames - we got them back whole. we can do the cutting here and since its almost twice as much for them to do it... well, e were glad to pay the $1/lbs for the curing and the smoking.

we asked that one be cut into 1" steaks and wrapped for friends and such but there was a mix up.... so the butcher shop didnt charge us for that! even better!

its currently 11* and no one is happy. at all. boo cursed snow! booo!!! yesterday, in fact, i believe i had rabies....such was my winter hatred. i'm better now. The Big Man plied me with chocolate and a lot of caramel popcorn. it worked.

Happy TWENTYTEN (not two thousand and ten)!!!

Ha ha! :gig I opened your thread with one hand while holding breakfast - a leftover chunk of cold ham from last night - in the other! YUMMY HAM! Makes you want to kiss a pig.
