I'm a mocha kind of gal.....DH thinks it is soooooo gross when I put chocolate in my coffee! I have even done half hot chocolate and half coffee before with lots of sugar.....got weird looks for that one too.....I figure I might as well kill 2 addictions at once!!!

white and bitter...... I agree, do NOT tell my hubby that one!

QA, I found my sipping chocolate at Trader Joes. I haven't even looked anywhere else. I'm thinking I could probably make a passable copy, but the ingredients would have to be good quality.
It is much, much richer than regular hot chocolate. The instructions on the box said 3 tablespoons mix to 1/3 cup of whole milk. I put 3 T in a whole cup of milk and it was crazy rich. I am not brave enough to try the 1/3 cup :th And with cream :th:th
I actually have some cream from Snowville creamery in the fridge :drool I was going to make ice cream, but maybe this weather calls for something different.
K, lemme put chains on the 4x4, pack up my snoe shoes and shovel, and i'll be over! :p

Farm Kitchen 1/8/10

Do you know what I love about farming/self-sufficiency/self-reliance whatever you want to call it? I love being prepared. Especially in the kitchen, I love having a well run, well manage, well stocked kitchen. I spend a lot of time growing, processing, and stocking up the ol' larder so we are usually in tip top shape. Perfect for emergency situations like this:

Last nite, after a full day of sulking and whining as the Winter Of My Discontent '10 raged outside, I decided there was no way I was standing over the stove making dinner. I went downstairs and informed The Big Man that I was On Strike.

Normally when I announce that I'm On Strike The Big Man leaps up and says Don't worry! I'll make dinner.... and then he hurries off to call the local pizza place. I love it.

However, this time when I announced I was On Strike we both just sadly looked out the window at The White Death falling out of the sky. He wasn't going anywhere...especially since they declared a Snow Emergency Level One for our county. We were stuck here but we had to eat so this is what I did:

1 . Skulked downstairs to one of the freezers and pulled out a baggie of tomato sauce from last summer's Big Tomato Harvest.
2. Opened the Meat Freezer and grabbed out a baggie of turkey x pork meatballs already cooked and ready for action.
3. Cut open the sauce and plopped it in a big pot over low heat on the stove. I returned to sulking on the couch.
4. When I could smell the sauce I heaved up off the couch, microzapped the meatballs until they were thawed, then threw them in with the sauce. I returned to sulking on the couch.
5. After listening to the plucky weather guy talk for about 5 mins about how The White Death would continue falling from the sky for the rest of the foreseeable future, I heaved up again from the couch and made a quick cheese/bechamel sauce (3 Tbls of butter, 3 Tbls of flour, cook for a minute or two, add 1.5 cups of milk, stir, add handful of cheese, a bit of garlic, black pepper and nutmeg). By the time it was done the tomato sauce had thickened and the meatballs were warmed throughout.
6. Meatballs and sauce were slid into a baking pan, cheese sauce on top, a dusting of parm and 15 mins in a hot oven later...

Dinner!

I was clever enough to have made bread earlier in the day so the whole dinner thing took about seven minutes of actual standing up time. Which left me plenty of time to sulk about the storm.

And that's why I love being prepared....

Just to let you know (ie: gloat) it is about 38 C (100 f) here at the bottom of Australia today, hotter tommorrow, hotter again monday 41 c (106 f) & finally cooler Tuesday back to about 25 c (77 f)

Actually the heat is almost (okay - nowhere near almost) as bad as the cold, you still can't do anything because it is too hot, but at least it is only for a few days....

You have my sympathys....booooo to the white death!!!

I'd rather have the hot hot hot than this crap we have now. :/

I hate winter.

I want to move to Georgia.
