Are you truly glad to be done with milking? I'm working on drying off my girls. I put a bunch of milk in the freezer and I'm hoping to be able to drink it. I will definitely miss the milk. I make a breakfast shake every morning and it definitely tastes better with raw milk.

I'm milking a goat for someone else and I'm thinking that maybe having one goat in milk through the winter wouldn't be a bad thing. It takes me about 5 minutes to milk that one goat. So it is something for me to think about. This year it won't be happening. I'm hoping to have everyone dried up within the next couple of weeks. I have 3 girls bred and should be getting the other 3 girls bred within the week so I want everything going to growing kids.

I put some chickens in the freezer so that freed up some chores time. Also alpaca birthing is slow right now but still have alpacas here. I can definitely understand wanting fewer chores and getting a break. I know I need one. Still working at Meyer Hatchery but I think it won't be long before I'm laid off. The orders are slowing down. I have plenty to do at home so I'm ready to be laid off.
is this a seasonal thing or an economy thing?

Hatchery business is very seasonal. Come spring they should be busy again.

hey K! we started milking VERY early this year so it feels like we've been doing this a long long long time. i'm still gonna milk Deb 2x a day and Nibs in the morning. so we'll have milk for a while. i think it was more of a pain than anything since Sunny had really slowed down on her milk, so it seemed like a waste of time. i would have stopped milking her earlier but she wasnt our gal so we didnt think we should make that decision.

we'll be stocking up milk for sure - the first time we have to buy a $5 or $6 gallon of milk we be a sad sad day. but we dont think we can milk Deb thru - it kinda doesnt feel fair to her esp if we breed her (probably in Nov). hopefully we'll only have a couple months to "make up" with store milk. and we're hoping our breeder we let us have Sunny back next year. it really worked out and he was thrilled at her condition.

'Zilla you said it! of course she is overweight and terribly unhealthy - i think she's on like 4 different Rx's. but we have to hear about how unhealthy we eat all the time. she even got me a subscription of Cooking Light so i'll adopt better eating habits. including that she keeps telling us we need to drink DIET soda. TBM cant drink coffee anymore so he usually has one mountain dew for the caffeine in the morning... so we hear about this all the time. but not one word about how he's lost at least 30lbs this summer...... and me, i'm normal size despite how i have to eat like a hobbit during our busy season.

and she only eats packaged food because she is a W-O-M-A-N and it would be so degrading for her to actually cook....of course she has a lot to say about me being the 'housewife-y' type and how i'm pulling down the entire gender with my old fashioned womanly ways. one time she told me to watch Buffy so i could learn more about female empowerment.

us: *blink blink*

i dont think she knows or remembers that i retired at 38 from a typically male-dominated industry....or that i'm more likely to be seen as one of the guys - by the guys - and not standing around in heels (which i dont even own anymore) and pearls. in an alternate reality, with all my swearing and punching-in-the-arm dude behavior, i would fit very nicely with the crew of the 62 truck. and the drinking of course.

unless of course there was a mouse. then you know, i get all girly and stuff.

anyway. we'll just keep laughing as long as the MIL keep serving up the laughs.

;-)

:gig Stupid me watched Buffy for the pure camp, the great characters and because Joss Whedon rules. I was supposed to be taking notes for my feminist studies class?!?!?!

I suck!

It is seasonal. People don't want to be caring for chicks into the winter. Meyer ships either until or through November (can't remember) and then stops until the end of February.

They are busiest April through July. Although I have to say orders just kept coming in August. It has only really started slowing down just last week.

Yes, she is so comfortable with your fat grossness seeing how accepting you are at being a total tub of lard. How can you not feel complimented?
