Well actually just the usual number, but I do have an unusual amount of dogs and cats. Six dogs and four cats currently call Dizzy Dog Ranch their home. Considering our budget, that is quite a lot. Course the one dog is a foster so we don't support her, but every animal that has ever lived here has taken some sort of toll out of the house. I just assume it is a "given".

My newest (and yet unnamed) kitten gives love BITES and took a bite out of my chin! Then she hung on......so I DO have a new hole in my CHIN.

do i look different????

yesterday we took Sunny back to her home herd - so i'm officially "one goat short" and i feel about 150lbs lighter and 15 minutes shorter on chores. whew!

we loved having her but dang she was without a doubt the ugliest thing i'd ever seen. but we milked like a champ most of the summer. however about a month ago she kinda shut down so it was time for her to go back.

we found out her daughter won the big award at state so the breeder was thrilled to have her back and he said we did a great job with her. i worked really had to make sure she was fat and shiny for her return. so yay!

then we met the MIL at the best fried chicken, family run place in the state. it was awesome - the chicken that is. the MIL wasnt her full on weird self and we were able to tune out most of it....so it wasnt so bad. and she bought lunch so we were happy.

but of course there was some weirdness and we laughed on the way home.... we were telling her about how big the pigz are and how they are doing such a great job on clearing their yard, and the bacons are huge and......

....and she says, "have you had your cholesterol checked? you really need to do that."

us: *blink blink* (each of us hoping that maybe she'd say 'great work on the pigs'

then she was saying something about how the old timers would feed their hogs oats and then she says, " i dont even know where you could ever GET oats now.."

us: *blink blink* (um.. we have oats in our field right now. thats our cover crop this year. and we have a sack of oats in our barn right now. )

then the big one - when we were talking about the goats she says, "you should show the goats at the fair"

us: *Laughing*
her: why not? i loved showing sheep when i was in 4H
us: cuz we're not 12 and we have real work to do.

so i dunno. she doenst have any idea what we do all day and i'm pretty sure that when she looks across the table all she sees is us as a couple of pre-teens and not mid-40's and running our own show.

oh well. at least there was chicken and really good pie. and we're one goat lighter these days.

so basically i didnt even have to milk last nite. Dahlia was sippin' off Debbie all day b/c we didnt put her and Nibbles in their own yard (we were gone all day). i hate to say it but i'm kinda looking forward to easier chores.

for labor day we are making ribs and hanging out - we finally got our fall cool down and we are glad. other than that - our labor day is a lot of work! but i got some really interesting comments on my labor day blog post ... pretty much its what we all think - its worse than "they" are saying and a lot of folks need help. i was pretty moved by the folks who went to a soup kitchen to find out the "poor" these days are just everyday everybodies.

we think our hen Inky is gonna hatch today or tomorrow - poor gal, she's tried so hard to have a successful hatch this whole summer... i hope it works.

:)

 I feel your pain with the MIL. My mother must be related to her. She says the most bizarre things at the most inappropriate times. :smack And when you do get an 'atta boy' or compliment, there's always a zinger attached. "I like that shirt, it really hides all the extra pounds you've put on." Uh...thanks?

omg she could be my FIL's sister :th

at least she wasn't as weird as normal.

My FIL on the other hand - nearly had his mouth punched shut by ME the other night. Said we needed to have 6 more kids. I told him to shut up. Said he was going to go talk to my Doc to make sure I'm not getting broken. I scream, "call your kid in Florida who only has 2 and tell HIS wife to get pregnant"

He changed topics.

Then accused us of working our kids too hard just because they were excitedly (notice I said excitedly) running around and gathering up the kindling wood and bigger pieces of wood for our wiener roast.

Shoulda uninvited him.

He's 71 - we try to be patient. But, I think parents forget we're adults and living our own lives and God Forbide should we make decisions that don't involve them (on Saturday he whined that E and I had gone to town while kids were in school to "window shop" and he never gets to go have fun).

You should get your cholesterol checked...because when it comes back normal you can hand her the report and watch her head explode. You should be eating bacon while talking about it I think...

I actually did that. My MIL, who has her weird moments about our animals too (I'll share the "don't look the monkey in the eye story someday.....) was very concerned about my dietary changes and the fact that I eat bacon, red meat, butter, full fat dairy, etc. So I showed her the blood work results, before and after. She still doesn't believe me completely but admits there may be something to it...

Are you truly glad to be done with milking? I'm working on drying off my girls. I put a bunch of milk in the freezer and I'm hoping to be able to drink it. I will definitely miss the milk. I make a breakfast shake every morning and it definitely tastes better with raw milk.

I'm milking a goat for someone else and I'm thinking that maybe having one goat in milk through the winter wouldn't be a bad thing. It takes me about 5 minutes to milk that one goat. So it is something for me to think about. This year it won't be happening. I'm hoping to have everyone dried up within the next couple of weeks. I have 3 girls bred and should be getting the other 3 girls bred within the week so I want everything going to growing kids.

I put some chickens in the freezer so that freed up some chores time. Also alpaca birthing is slow right now but still have alpacas here. I can definitely understand wanting fewer chores and getting a break. I know I need one. Still working at Meyer Hatchery but I think it won't be long before I'm laid off. The orders are slowing down. I have plenty to do at home so I'm ready to be laid off.
