bein' as it monday ... it must mean that its time for the "She said WHAT?!?!" segment of the show - otherwise known as the "report from our visit with the MIL yesterday"

i know you've all been waiting for it.... sigh.........

so

we showed up after church like normal.... and on the table were a couple of ratty tomatoes. trying to be polite my husband say "oh geez look at those big tomatoes." and then the MIL launched into her adventures of growing 3 tomato plants. we sat politely listening to the trials and tribulations of how hard it was to grow those maters. but it was all worth it. especially since she probably COULD have canned 4 or 5 quarts of those maters.

us: *blink blink*

her: and next year i might just do some canning... (then she launched into a lecture about the benefits of canning)

us: *blink blink*

mercifully it started to thunder so we hopped up and ran for the truck saying we "had chicks out" and had to get home before it started storming on them.....

as we peeled out of the drive we sat in silence for a few minutes. then started snickering.

me: she really does not have any idea what we do all day?
he: nope.
me: you realize that we've probably canned about 100 pounds of maters so far?
he: yep
me: and the house looks like the Ball Canning Book puked all over our kitchen?
he: yep

we figure we got off easy yesterday... but next weekend is the big family reunion - but this is the family reunion for her grand aunts family on her mothers side. she wants us to come and "sit at the table with her." turned out i was busy...but i shoved TBM forward and said he'd be happy to go.

the MIL said she'd cook so he doesnt have to bring a covered dish. she's bringing ham sandwiches and either lemon bars or brownies - she hadnt decided but she has a box of each.

us: *blink blink*

later in the car, after the above conversation....

he: will you make lemon bars for me?
me: maybe
he: i'll stop and get a box of mix for you........
me: please stop talking.

just so's ya know... here's how we make lemon bars 'round here . step one is that i have to go and get a jar of cream from the freezer and give it a good shaking so i can get enough butter for these lemony delights. then i'm heading out to the hen house to get some duck eggs.

i say no more.

LOL, it does sound like you got off easy this week :)

And since you've got an out for the reunion next week, you'll have to live vicariously through your hubs as he tells his tale of woe afterward ;)

(My kitchen also looks like the Ball Canning Book puked all over it )

y'all suck....we didn't have anything to can this year but next year....you just wait! ;)

My BF's idea of cooking is opening a box or bag and putting something in the microwave. I love her but if there are more than 3 steps involved she doesn't do it  Her world famous side dish is an extra large can of Bush's Baked Beans....seriously, she just brings the can to a function. It's hysterical...God love her.

Now now...you're in the South, you know the correct usage is "Bless her heart!" (while shaking your head & rolling your eyes).

Well if it makes me fit in better, I HAVE one of those canning books. Fresh crisp and barely opened.

I haven't caught the canning bug yet but I'm TRYING.....I don't have an excess of anything except goat milk though. And eggs.
