you know i'd pitch in that you need to work more than you sit, eat real food - but not so much...lots of veggies and protein... avoid "white" carbs...

dont eat anything boxed or prepared....see how much sugar is in stuff before you eat it...and dont drink anything but water (and coffee and tequila)

but heck

today i had turkey-n-noodles AND stuffing AND now i'm eating a big piece of pie and yes i has ice cream on it. and i havent done one darn thing today but milk them goats and sit here and snuggle my good, old, ratty cat....

and in fact, i have eaten myself happy
;-)

AND....when your basic lifestyle consists of work more than you sit, eat real food - but not so much...lots of veggies and protein... avoid "white" carbs...

dont eat anything boxed or prepared....see how much sugar is in stuff before you eat it...and dont drink anything but water (and coffee and tequila)

Then you can manage to eat like a pig ....I mean OFG... on occasion and not gain a pound!

No it doesn't mean never eat corn on the cob, it mean be mindful of it. If you are going to enjoy a high glycemic load food, moderate it with a solid high fiber meal (lots of other veggies) with good fats and protein. Treat corn and potatoes (and peas) as a treat....not a daily menu item. To your body they are sugar.

A white potato is a 104 on the glycemic index with a G.load of 36
A Sweet potato is 54 on the GI with a G load of 12
Read below for a better explanation of what that means.

What is the Glycemic Index?

The Glycemic Index (GI) is one the best tools for fat loss. It measures how quickly foods breakdown into sugar in your bloodstream. High glycemic foods turn into blood sugar very quickly. Starchy foods like potatoes are a good example. Potatoes have such a high GI rating; its almost the same as eating table sugar.

What is the Glycemic Load (GL)?

The GI tells you how fast foods spike your blood sugar. But the GI wont tell you how much carbohydrate per serving youre getting. Thats where the Glycemic Load is a great help. It measures the amount of carbohydrate in each service of food. Foods with a glycemic load under 10 are good choicesthese foods should be your first choice for carbs. Foods that fall between 10 and 20 on the glycemic load scale have a moderate affect on your blood sugar. Foods with a glycemic load above 20 will cause blood sugar and insulin spikes. Try to eat those foods sparingly.

Thank you for explaining things Dace. But is there a "list" some where. One that has all those foods with a GI under 10 that you say we should be eating. I did Atkins eons ago. Are his low carb veggies the same that your talking about?

Atkins was the same way, lots of good fats, protein and double the veggies. Splenda like Wifey said and the heavy cream or half and half in my coffee.

Wait until Free sees this. Dace your going to get a gold star!!!!

Look at the links I posted...I just looked again and it shows peas as lower than I expected, so perhaps I am wrong there....but I have always heard they were high.

Snap peas eaten with the shell are probably fine as they have a higher fiber content... which slows down the conversion to blood sugar.

I think that is about it....corn, potatoes, peas (still sticking with that one) ...oh when carrots are cooked their GI value goes up, so they are better raw than cooked. Look at the list and try to eat lots of the foods that are at 50 or under on the GI list and 10 and under on the GL list.

But don't focus on what you should avoid, focus on filling up your day with nutrient dense foods that you love, veggies, yogurt, cheese, meat, nuts, a little fruit.....fill up girl, you can toss the calorie counting out the window....munch up and watch the weight fall away :thumbsup

You know I live for gold stars!!

Yes, Atkins promotes low GI but be careful there because veggies are carbs (good carbs) and Atkins promotes very limited carbs(I think...but maybe that is someone else) Healthy carbs are good! *for most of us, there are a few here who have to be very strict with even good carbs.

Technically low GI fall under 50 and low GL (load) should be under 10.

There are lots of lists out there and they all vary, so use them loosely.
