We had 2 acres total. We cut our hay (by hand) from a couple areas in the farm yard. It wasn't all we used for the winter. But imo, every bit helps. Plant some good seeds and make some use out of that front yard. :D

Hmmm, now I have to think...lets see...we have about 45 chickens...
Layer pellets x 4 bags a month..11.00 a bag...$44.00

5 Turkeys and 2 ducks x2 bags pellets a month...11.00 a bag $22.00

4 Sheep...1 bag a month...12.00

2 butcher hogs.. $80.00 a month. ( they gotta go soon!)
3 small dogs... 1 bag food lasts 3 months.@ 18.00 so $6.00 a month ( not includeing the probably 20.00 in treats)

2 barn cats.. 1 40 pound bag of Barn Cat food will last about 3 months... $20 a bag....so about $6.00 a month.
Total....

$150ish!
Not too bad...:/

30 chickens(free ranged)= 1 bag of mash, $22.00(100#)

2 sheep and one calf=pasture and hay (Hay was bartered for work but works out to about $2.00 per bale and I don't quite know yet how much they will consume each month~maybe someone could help me with that.) For now, they eat hardly even a flake every other day, if that. I'm going to go with around $9.00/mo for now based on a flake a day.

2 large dogs= 40# bag of feed per month, sometimes a little more. $18.00

2 cats=free range cats/3 bags of food per month @ $1.75 per bag.

Extra treats= BOSS/$20 bag, Sweet Feed/$8.00, Oats/$15.00~these treats are only needed about every third month.

$68 per month.

Alright, I couldn't resist....

24 chickens.....about $9 in summer, maybe $20 in winter.

2 turkeys.....about $10

4 goats.....$4 for grain and about $16 for alfalfa pellets. In winter, not sure, maybe $50 for hay? Free the rest of the year. Hopefully I can cut more hay next summer and pay less in the winter.

2 large cats, about $12 for premium homemade food.

1 sub-compact dog, about $12 for raw chicken wings.

Spring, summer, and fall: $63
Winter: $123

Dog (70 lb lab) - $16.00 per month - he only gets a 1/2 cup morning and night to maintain his 70 lb weight. With $4 dollars of doggy treats per month. 2 treats per day only. For a total of $20.00 per month.

30 +/- chickens - Nutrina Laying Pellets @10.50 per bag x 3
Nutrina Scratch @ 10.50 per bag x 2
Total 52.50 per month

Rabbit - well right now I am down to one so maybe $10 dollar every 2 months.

Fish - 6 dollars a year so .50 a month.

For a grand total of $78.00 per month.

Since I no longer sell eggs there is no offset to any of these cost.
My justification - Since I am to busy to go anywhere and spend money, I call it entertainment and therefore a wash.

What is the smallest plot of hay worth sowing?
Not sure but I have a couple of areas in my small back yard that I am planting red clover in. I figure the ducks can snack on them. Every little bit helps.

funny you plant clover

I can't give it away here.

horses love it but the goats hate it.
clover is taking over.

going to plow under a small 2 acre pature, kill that clover and plant pasture grasses again.

UGH
funny how areas are so different
