Well supper is in the oven and I have a few minutes to tell you a little about us.

I am married to a wonderful guy that I will call Big K. We have two children and he has a daughter from a previous relationship. Our two, P is 6 and B is 3 and A (really my stepdaughter, but love her like my own) is 23.

We live in Central Missouri we I grew up on 80 of the family farm. My father raises beef cattle and is still groing strong at 75 years old. My mother retired about 6 years ago and is suffering from emphysema and COPD. She was also recently diagnosed with breast cancer and just started chemo therapy.

I originally was a corporate person and then went to a daycare to be closer to my children and then back to the home when I realized I wanted my children to be sheltered from all the absurdities (is that a word?) of the world. I am still at home doing the Mama and Wife roles, but have now also become the caretaker for my mother. About 2 years ago, she became less and less able to take care of their house with her COPD. She is on oxygen 24 hours a day and is now dealing with breast cancer.

For a little background on my state of mind/lifestyle. I have always said I was born a hundred years too late. I keep chickens for meat and eggs, always put out a large garden, pick and can those veggies along with anything other friuts and veggies I can get my hands on. Due to me being home with the kids, money is always tight, so I have learned to make homemade laundry detergent and went back to line drying the clothes. I love to crochet and quilt and anything else crafty. I especially love to be able to be crafty with leftovers that others think of as trash.

I think that children should be taught that hard work is not a punishment but a necessity for a family to survive and that if it is done together, it actually can be fun. Although mine are a little to young to give the hard labor too, I expect them to help with the things they are able to do. I want them to grow up with the skills to be able to grow their own food and to make due with the things they have. And I want them to understand that they can be totally realiant upon themselves for the things they need and also to realize that should they be lucky enough to have an abundance, that God asks us to share that abundance with others.

I really look forward to talking and chatting with all of you and have gained a wealth of knowledge in the few months I have been lurking here.

So howdy and stop in and read about our big adventures anytime.

Well I wanted to share with you my love for blackberries and hatred for the birds that eat them. We got several suckers given to us about three years ago. We planted them and had no idea how to care for them, (really we are still in the dark about that, but this year we reworked the rows and dug and reset about 50 new plants from the middle of the rows. We have about a gallon of red berries now, but I am afraid that the birds will end up getting them before we can pick them. I had always imagined the the birds that ate them were sparrows and outher nuisance birds.

But tonight after running supper to my Mom and Dad, we pulled in to find a mama and daddy Cardinal having supper in our blackberry patch. UUUUGGGHHHHH! It was easy to hate the birds when they were unknown but how can I hate cardinals (one of my favorite birds). So Big K, P and B and I picked a few of the ripe ones and I had to share a picture of them with you. Most are larger than a quarter in length. Now if only I could get 10 or 12 gallons more like this.

Me, too!!!!!!!!! :welcome

Except I tend to feel I was born a couple hundred years too late. I would love to have lived during the 1800's or, even better, Colonial times.

I also loved your answer to number 74.

ooooo the power company got all of ours. :somad In our old neighborhood, if you can even call it that, we used to walk down the dirt road and pick the unbelievable amount of wild blackberries growing there. Well, the kids and I went to go check them out and lo and behold the power company had come through and cut down everything that was within 20 feet of a power line. All those blackberry bushes....gone. So mad. My kids were even madder than I was.....I'm still hearing about how much they hate the power company..... :p

Oh, and welcome, btw! :D

Welcome! My neighbor last year suggested going to goodwill and picking up some sheer curtains for 50 cents and clothespinning them over the blackberries. She's gardened for 60 years and it worked like a charm!
