Just to try it is not very expensive at all. As a matter of fact, you may already have most of the ingredients in your pantry (olive oil, castor oil, lard, for example).

The most expensive part are the fragrance oils. I got my first ones at Hobby Lobby for $2.99 a 1/2 ounce. It takes about 1 oz. to scent a pound of soap. A pound of soap will make 4-5 bars depending on how you cut them.

I think the lye is the hardest thing to find. I was lucky that I have a chemical company in our area. I had to buy it in bulk @ 55 lbs. for about $64.

I've used cardboard boxes and tupperware for molds with great results.

The more "exotic" you make the soap, the more expensive it will be. Personally, I like the ones best that are made with crisco and lard, very inexpensive.

Your soaps are absolutely gorgeous. I was making soap like a mad fiend for a while there, but haven't done much since I got sick. Do you mind if I ask you about packaging? In the picture, it looks like the bars bare and are just wrapped with your label. Is that right? I have been wrapping mine in plastic wrap because I found if I don't, they get dirty or pick up lint and bits of "stuff" and sometimes the oils in the soap seep into the paper label. How do you avoid that?

Right now they are just wrapped in a label. I used to scrapbook (alot) and have paper (alot) left. I'm trying to use what I already have. I have noticed that some of the soaps seep. But, so far it's not been a big problem. I keep them in closed plastic containers to avoid the dust (only way at my house :/ ). Sometimes, I put them in the little clear "treat" bags that you can get cheaply at Walmart. I punch a hole in the label and tie it with a ribbon (scrapbooking supplies, again) around the bag.
