So good to hear that Ernie got a good report! I know you both are glad. What kinds of chickens are you going to concentrate on.......this week :D Sorry, I had to go there!

Seriously, though, what breeds do you want to keep/cull?

LOLOLOLOL OK so I change my chickening that often??????????

Must seem like it, but I've actually still have my specials.

It may seem like I keep changing things up, but really I've only done away with the ones that 1) either I had no interest in breeding, 2) I didn't have a rooster nor want to mess with finding a roo for, or 3) Were mixed breeds or were less than breed quality.

My most favorite chickens of my standards are my Speckled Sussex. If I was ever told I'd only be able to keep one breed of chickens, they would be it. I had a lady email me asking if I'd sell my Sussex roo...that was a fat NO.

So the Standard size chicken breeds I'll be keeping for breeding are:
Speckled Sussex (I have 1 roo Strut, 7 hens only two are named, Singer and Brown Girl)
Blue/Black/Splash Cochins (Which for now consists of Quincy, Louisa, Polk, and two younger cochin pullets coming up)
Cuckoo Marans (Consists of Monroe, Elizabeth, and 3 yet unnamed younger pullets)
Blue Laced Red Wyandottes (I've 2 roos, Duece and Diesel, and 3 hens, Lacie, Edna, and Gertrude)
Welsummers (Have one roo, named Kellogg, and two unnamed Hens)

Bantam Breeds for breeding are:
Quail Antwerp Robert and Fran plus have 4 young ones in a grower, looks like 1 cockerel and 3 pullets :)
Mille Fleur d'uccles Cricket (Roo), Anna, Ruth, and Elizabeth
Porcelain d'Uccles (still in grower pen, but looks like I ended up with 2 cockerels and 3 pullets?)
Black Tailed Buff Japanese (have 4, 3 pullets, 1 cockerel)
Gold Laced Cochin Bantams (We have one roo named Captain and some younger ones coming up that we aren't sure on sex yet.)

DD is working on building up her own small flock of bantam Sizzle/Frizzles.

I do have some chicks in the brooder in the house yet that I have to decide on.

I'm working to build up a small flock of BCM's, but that's not going as planned yet.

My egg flock is going to be made up of Red Star's (since the lady opted to buy my EE's instead), my BBS/Barred/Welsummer crosses, a mixed breed hen of DS's, my pet Delaware Daisy, New Hampshires, and 2 Pheonix hens (until I get them a roo!).

In the next couple weeks I should have the breeder pens done for the Standard chickens, so I should have the five standard breeds separated out soon.

I hope.

Ok Aly, I got some pallets and am planning on making an A-frame like Ernie made. What kind of nails did he use? When you posted the picture of it, you mentioned posting more of it in construction, did you end up posting them? I haven't found them anywhere.

Ah, no I'm sorry, I didn't get to it yet.

He used short twist nails. Small silver heads so they won't be noticeable that much.

Guess I should find my pics of that and post them. :p

I would appreciate it if you could. I think I've got it all figured out but it would be nice to see some extra pictures.

I removed nine boards from one pallet, they had been nailed on using twist nails also. It appears to be the same kind of wood that you've used. The other pallets have pine boards that are horrid to try to do anything like that with. Hopefully the other pallets I can get have the better wood.

Does your A-frame have a roost inside? I'm planning on adding a frame to it with chicken wire to make a portable pen. It should look nice in the garden. I'm just wondering about the roost because I'm thinking I might make it a bit wider but not as tall so I'm not using as many boards. I'll probably put silkies in it so they can just hunker down in a corner anyway..

Nope, no roost in it.

We're actually planning to do another one, with step by step instructions and actual measurements :p

Ohh. You'll have to post it on BYC too for others.

If I make another I think I'm just going to see if I can find some cedar shackle and use that, I love the look of it.
