Oh, most of those store are just tourist traps. Except for Lehman's and I remember a bulk goods shop that was nice. I looove to browse at Lehman's. There's a diner on main street in Berlin that was really good too.

Quail

I am going to try to take some pullets to the small animal auction this Thursday night.

Any suggestions for success?

FF, how much are you hoping to get per pullet? and have you tried selling them via CL first?

I don't normally stick around at my auctions. Our is just a small auction, so I drop off and leave notice for them to mail my check, and then I head home.

What breeds are you planning to sell and what ages are they?

I hope at least $5.00 each.

They are 11 weeks old.

I have for sure 3 California White pullets, 2 (possibly more) Welsummer roosters, and possibly a pair (or 2 pair) of Easter Eggers (mixed color Ameraucanas) and 1 of those pullets is a rumpy.

I will probably stick around for the sale - just curious. I usually attend horse/ tack sales or farm auctions.

If you want atleast $5 each, I would try advertising on craigslist first if you haven't already, or even on BYC if you haven't already, and anything that doesn't sell before Thursday take to the auction.

No guarantees at auctions that you'll get what you want for them. I made a whole whopping $3.60 on 3 baby bunnies last week. They sold for $1.25 each :he $3.60 was my cut after the auction fees. It wasn't worth taking them in, but it was a chance I took. I could have sold them for $5 each out the door if I'd advertised them locally first.

Oh, Aly, you do make me wish I was free to go with you. But I just don't see how I'd swing it. :hit
You have to fill your other obligations first! I may be a poultry enabler, but NO WAY am I going to take part in woo'ing you away from previous engagements

FF, remember, it also depends on who is AT the auction as to how much they sell for. There might be someone there who really needs a Wellie Cockerel, so they'll bid thinking they will get one extremely cheap, unless someone else is looking for one, too!
Good luck! I hope they sell well for you! :thumbsup

I realize that selling cockerels is not usually a profitable deal. Do they allow you to put a reserve on the small animals? If so I will just take them home and finish them for the canner!

Do you usually sell them by a pair or trio or is it better to sell as individuals (for example the rumpy pullet)?

I don't know where you are located, so not sure what auctions are like in your area?

Cockerels around here usually sell for 50 cents to $3 each, except some Welsummers this spring went for $9 each! They were adults, though.

I normally put at least 2 chickens in the auction cages, because they are sold by the peice. I put a cockerel in with a hen/pullet, because the pullet might bring $5 and then they have to pay that for the cockerel, too. ;)
