sylvie - we don't veal them out if that's what you're asking.

Male calves are just about the only calves that come through auction around here. The farmers keep their heifers - unless they have a rare bumper crop of them and are over run - but all the males are run to auction.

I don't think the farmer who brought these in was expecting them to only bring in $2. These seem to be all very healthy boys. If they had been at our local auction, they would have sold for way more, and would have been pushed as good 4-H calves. Their coats are very shiny and they have a lot of energy. We are watching their bathroom habits, tho, because E says watching their poos will tell you a lot about a calf's health.

We plan to pinch two of them, and maybe keep the third intact to cross to our black angus/holstein heifer when she's old enough. I'm holding out hope that Blessing, being half dairy, will have a nice enough udder that I can milk her.

We'll raise them up and sell off the ones we don't want to keep at 1 - 2 years, depending on how they do. The pinched boys should put on weight and fatten up. Boss - who's also a Jersey - has fattened up nice over the winter.

2$ that is a steal:) I am just wondering...
How did your hubby react when you kinda got out of that car with all your new blessings? probably holding a couple of cages with ducks and herding 3 moo-moo's in to the barn?:)
Apart from that... it must have been quite a thing to watch the two of you at the auction:) I bet you can expect some calls for whatever she might be interested in, from the lady that gave you her phone.

About duck recipes, "czernina" something I admit personally do not like very much:

You crack me up!

We were just at the amish cheese shop, and they had a decorative sign that said "your husband called and said to just get whatever you want". I should buy that for you :gig

That was a great story. :gig
I hope SO is like your E, when I bring home 2 goaties :p
I'm going off to buy some special goodies today, so I can make a nice dinner for him tonight ;) I think he'll need a backrub too

$2 for beef :ep What a deal. Heck, you can butcher them this fall and I bet you'll still end up with more meat than you could have bought for that kind of money, even if they don't fatten up too much. Go Aly!!:thumbsup

Awesome! I read the story on your blog and it made me laugh. The giggling woke SO up. I told him about it, and he said "damn, cows would fit in the back of the tahoe, wouldn't they? Well we don't have room in the apartment, don't think about it" I like how he assumes its a real risk that I would try and raise a $2 cow in my apartment.

Well, I got a couple pictures of the new calves today, and we have two of the three boys named. :)

This is Goliath - He is the smallest of the three calves I got at Roger's Auction last night. I chose to name him Goliath. my reasoning was, we'll name him Goliath, and tell him he has a big heart - and hopefully he'll grow strong in heart and become a big boy.

I named the medium sized calf Trevor - just because I liked it and thought he looked like a Trevor. The biggest calf is not yet named.
This is Trevor (top) and UnNamed (bottom right) giving eachother a wet kiss.

And this picture is of two Cuckoo Maran hens. I imagined the caption to this would say: Did you get that memo?!

Good For you Ally!

They sure are pretty. I could never eat a cow I raised. I just think they are tooooo cute.

So far I think I'm good with eatting the chickens..but I doubt I could do the cow.
