sylvie - we don't veal them out if that's what you're asking.
Male calves are just about the only calves that come through auction around here. The farmers keep their heifers - unless they have a rare bumper crop of them and are over run - but all the males are run to auction.
I don't think the farmer who brought these in was expecting them to only bring in $2. These seem to be all very healthy boys. If they had been at our local auction, they would have sold for way more, and would have been pushed as good 4-H calves. Their coats are very shiny and they have a lot of energy. We are watching their bathroom habits, tho, because E says watching their poos will tell you a lot about a calf's health.
We plan to pinch two of them, and maybe keep the third intact to cross to our black angus/holstein heifer when she's old enough. I'm holding out hope that Blessing, being half dairy, will have a nice enough udder that I can milk her.
We'll raise them up and sell off the ones we don't want to keep at 1 - 2 years, depending on how they do. The pinched boys should put on weight and fatten up. Boss - who's also a Jersey - has fattened up nice over the winter.
