The Humane Society I work with routinely dewormes all incoming puppies and kittens. And they usually have worms.
Be sure to continue to give Dewley milk, goat or sheep milk should be good. At 4 weeks, he should not be weaned yet. He should barely be starting canned food mixed with milk, in order to start the weaning process. Dog milk would naturally be best for him, but that is too hard to come by. One of the reasons I wanted goats, was so I could give some to the Humane Society for the kittens and puppies that don't do well on formula.
I had a friend in high school who had 2 newfoundlands and 1 St bernard. He loved the group Three Dog Night and knew first hand what they meant ;) He was never cold with those three on his bed, he had a large bed.
You also could not get into his house, past those dogs without him giving the comand that it was ok. But once you got the approval those dogs were the sweetest thngs ever. I loved cuddling with them.

Congratulations on your new dogs. I'm glad you are getting him a buddy. Everyone will be happier and I don't think anyone will mess with you. I worm my animals with the same dewormer I use for alpacas. If I have to already have it for alpacas, why buy something else for other animals. Works like a charm.

Denise, I've been soaking his food in buttermilk. Its cheaper than whole milk and I think it is better for his tummy too....he loves it!

If Black Betty would have that lamb I could steal some milk from her! :D

I love the group Three Dog Night also....back when music was still music! :love

He helped me finish up the sheep shelter today and got stepped on twice.

He also ate his first giant pile of chicken poop and seemed to have tolerated it very well. Maybe I could market chicken poo puppy supplements? :D

He had a ball playing all by himself around our feet as we put the finishing touches on the feeding panels and the shelter and then~good farm dog that he is~curled up in the hay and took a snooze. He is going to do great here!

ETA: Might call the new little girl "Shane" instead of "Darling"~I know its a boy's name but she won't know it. ;) I'll be going to pick her up tomorrow...then comes the horror show of worms, buttermilk supplement and a good bath. Mom used Murphy's Oil soap on Dewley!!!

He smells lovely!

Oh, he's too cute!!! We have a Newfie nextdoor to us, Keira. Great dog! She woofs at us when we come outside. We say hi and she goes about her business. We helped take care of her when she was a pup and I was home with DS. We'd let her out twice a day. She was smaller than 1yo DS then. Not so much now!

Well...I got the sister today. I called her Shane and she is quickly worming her way into my heart~no pun intended! :D

She is very quiet and shy, loves to cuddle and be cuddled. She wasn't interested in his rough play and seems to be a real sissy....yelps if Dewley bites her ears. She is larger than him and can outdo him at the food bowl...will definitely have to have separate feed bowls.

I'll post pics of them together the next chance I have. She is very beautiful! :love

I think she will be my special pup, if you know what I mean... :hide

(Shhhhhh! Don't say the "favorite" word......)

I love Newfoundlands!!!!! :love

The Newfoundland dogs were brought in to breed with the St. Bernards to "save the breed". The original St. Bernards looked more like giant hound dogs with an oily, shorter, thicker double coat.

Now days you can get one that still resembles the original St Bernards or one that has the typical blocky forehead of a Newfoundland, with longer fur and more droopy features.

The longer fur was more of a downfall though b/c snow would cling to it, forming a giant dog snowball.

Right now I have one of each, a Newfie-ish one and an original hound dog one. Both are (or were...Jane is old now) fantastic athletes. I'll see if I can find photos of them.

One thing you may notice if they have any St. Bernard in them, is they want to be in your lap when you sit down. They were bred to find people buried in the snow, dig them out and then to lay on them to warm them back up. They were also bred to be independent thinkers, because they worked mostly alone (w/o humans telling them what to do). They can come across as stubborn because of this.

They even have webbed feet, aka built in snow shoes. :p

My first St. Bernard was a female, we named her Dylan...they can pull off a boy name quite easily. :D

Cute puppy!!! :love

Ok, here is Jane, see the Newfie-ish blocky forehead?

Here is Kate, more hound dog-ish:

That isn't the best photo, but it is all I have. Jane is in the back ground. (I took this photo of Kate just as she pulled herself an apple right out of the tree.)

Sally, I haven't seen the sire of these pups but these people claim he is all brown with little white and no black on him. Is it possible they have a brown Newfie instead of a SB? These pups look exactly like black Newfies, each and every one.

The mother is definitely a Visla mix, so no black in her background.

These pups don't have the big jowls of a SB, nor any coloring to indicate they are SB.

I know SB are all about land rescues and Newfies are about water~which I find fascinating!

Do your SBs make good LGDs? Rollfarms on BYHs felt the Newfies to be too gentle and lacking in aggression to protect livestock. She owns one and says they are too laid back for this task.

Your dogs are beautiful! They look so soft! :love

BTW, how is Sam doing? Did she get the card? :D

OMG she (we) loved the card! So funny! Thank you so much!!

The houndish St. "Kate" (2nd photo) is our LGD, we call her the "yard bouncer" or sometimes "Billy Bad A$$". NOTHING comes into the yard via land or air. She was a terrible "pet" dog but makes a wonderful LGD..the best. She hates it inside and is hypersensitive to everything that is going on outside. She can catch squirrels and rats--she is that fast. (And nothing scares her.)

Both dogs are fantastic swimmers. Jane, the more newfie built St. used to pull our inner-tubes across the lake. She is also very sensitive and codepentdent, I think that is the Newfie in her. She would rather cuddle the livestock and Kate would rather protect it.

They make a good team.

I can't wait to see your pups grow up!

I think my sis is going to get one now! We'll all have Newfies before long.

I can't wait to see what kind of dogs they will be also. I've always wanted one....all those pics of Land Seer Newfies I've seen in all these older folk's houses all show them with little children. I've always loved those prints.

One, in particular, showed a little girl standing in the corner with her arm around the head of this giant dog...priceless. :)

My D1 and I have sibling pups from the same litter. (Not Newfies or Bernards, but Husky/German Shepherd).

I have REALLY enjoyed having the both of them. It is so interesting seeing how they are alike (both snuggle bunnies) and how they are different (Cassie is definitely more GS and Kooshie leans hard to Husky). Just like siblings in a family each is an individual. They KNOW they are litter mates. Just like kids they love each other and play and argue with each other.

I am glad you got the second pup. :D
