PP, Yes I am going to continue the egg blowing even after christmas. Maybe I can make some small money off it. So if you happen to think of me, save me a few. Thank you.

UPDATE

I wish we had smellaputer. I had to throw the hide out. Something happened to it. It was :sick
I followed all the steps (which were not particularly clear) as best I could. Day one-I applied the brain mixture
Day 2-I applied the brain mixture
Day 3-Skipped
Day 4-I applied the brain mixture
Then I put the very very damp towel on the skin until the next day, by then it was so stinky and had started to grow mold (that is what it looked like). I picked it up to unroll it and a whole handful of hair came out. :barnie Not what I wanted.
I think a whole bunch of things went wrong. I think I waited to long to get started on it.
I do not think it was scraped good enough.
I had to wait to long in between applying the brain mixtures.
I should not have rolled the skin up with the wet towel.
I should not have waited until the next evening to see if it was softened.

I told my hubby I was going to try again. I know someone who will supply me with 2 more skins and 2 more brains. Hubby wants me to wait until hunting season again. I said no, why wait, besides I do not want to ruin another of my skins.....I am going to practice first.
He is going to order some $9 bottle of tanning fluid. I told him, what if you cannot get the fluid? I tried to play the "What if" scenario. HUMPH He is still buying the fluid. Oh well.

Now I can continue with the eggs lol.

Your eggs are GORGEOUS!!! I wish I could get the time to do something like that...I'm still trying to find the time to sew and quilt and bake and not kill my children in the process...

Keep posting pics cause now I just want to see more!

Hmm....something tells me I am very thankful for no Smell-A-Puter! :sick

EWWwww and Puuuuuu....LOL

tanning is an art I think...it takes time to perfect it and you are doing the right thing, try and try. It involves tons of rubbing right? I think that matters a whole lot, but then again, I ain't got a clue..LOL

you go girl!

yea in the olden days there were no fabric stores to make clothes....one had to tan a hide to use....hmmm..modern conveniences like eating from a grocery store, taxes, etc. means we have to work...no time to tan! :)

Argh...vicious cycle ain't it???
LOL

Roosmom - I think I read somewhere that Indian women chewed the sinew (spelling) to make it soft and use it as thread or something. Are you gonna do that too?

Just giving you a hard time. I have a friend that use to tan hides. He left them in the freezer for ages before he even started on them and I have no clue what process he used. I am watching this process by you very closely. I have always wanted to tan a hide but never had the guts to dig in and do it.

When we process rabbits I hope to be able to tan those hides but they are done differently than the deer hide.

Keep working on it - you are a true pioneer in this area on this forum.

LOL just to let everyone know.....There is NO WAY I am taking one for the SS team and chewing a deer skin. Yes I know they used to do it. I might just try a little lick :sick , but there will be no chewing.

When I process my rabbits, I want to tan the hides also. When we lived up north, hubby shot a bear before, and I wanted to tan the bearskin. It was in the freezer for a long time. I read up alot about different methods of tanning at that time, too. But the kids were young, and I never got around to it. If memory serves me correctly, isn't there a step where you rub salt alll over it to dry out any possible remaining fat, etc. Also I remember reading boric acid or somthing.

Oh well, I will have to look it up when rabbit time comes. My first does will be bred around Dec. 15, so if all goes well, I should have some buns by April to try it on.

Roosmom.....where is that team spirit? LOL If you lick that thing you will be a much better woman than I am or will ever be. NO WAY.

MN- I found a website last week about tanning rabbit hides. I will go find it again and post a link on my personal page. The way this guy does it looks fairly easy and its a no rush thing. You can leave the hides in the mixture for up to a year.

Edited to add- MN - link is posted
