Well looks like it is time for the farm update from Dizzy Dog Ranch.
Bun watch: (And I mean rabbits....) Nana still is looking sadly at an empty nest box. I don't know what happened. I don't see any evidence of lost kits. I do think it is odd she made her nest so early, perhaps something happened back at that point that I missed? Perhaps she miscarried then. In any event, she is now two days past so it seems unlikely she will still kindle at this point.
Sister seems to be doing excellent with her group however. Being a good mom from what I can see, but gosh, the way baby rabbits are all snuggled in that fur ball, I don't see how you can check them very well without exposing them to the cold and ....rain. Which of course we are having. :bun
I gave up on those duck eggs. Rats. I fed the sort-of-sat-on eggs to the dogs, they looked perfectly normal and not fertilized at all. So I dunno if I just happened to see that duck laying her eggs slowly or what. She did pull out feathers for the nest and I thought that also meant broody? Oh well. I'm going to collect the eggs again for awhile and try to find some fake eggs for putting in there to encourage broodiness. I can get good money selling these eggs, I don't want to waste them if she isn't going to hatch any. I need an incubator!!!!! Hubby started making me one but I see I will have to finish the project myself here.
I am going to be gone tomorrow so I went over the goat milking routine with my younger son. They are getting so set in their ways and they do better if I do things just so. Also, I've gotten a lot better at milking them because I've figured their udders out, and I needed to show my son how I manage to milk. He was rolling his eyes at first but when he was done helping, I could tell he realized it was a valuable lesson. It is nice to have his help and to know he can back me up if I'm not feeling well and milk when he gets home.
My poor chickens are so sick of the rain. I'm planting seeds where I free range them so they cannot go out of their pen right now, I need their free range area to recover and grow again, the vegetation holds the hillside so overgrazing is not an option. They are not happy and egg production is down. I find I have a lot less kitchen scraps now than I used to...I am making much better use of the leftovers and such now that I am home and don't have as many goodies to share with them. I decided to stop free-ranging them in the "wild" section where we let the goats go in the summer, because I have just lost too many chickens too quickly that way, I think to a neighbor dog, or possibly a wild predator, but I think it is a certain dog who comes sniffing around occasionally. I don't know who it belongs to, but I've seen it ranging free about 3 miles from here on the road so who knows. I'm thinking I may not be able to let little Emilee go out there with the goats, being so small, until she grows bigger.
Things are looking good with my SSI paperwork and what not so I'm feeling better that things are moving along with that, as well. It will sure be nice to have an income again and we can stop being so deathly frugal. We are starting to have a huge list of things we need to do when I finally get paid, fix the dryer, fix the dishwasher, and fixing one of our two bathrooms that isn't working come top on the list. I'm especially tired of hanging my clothes to dry inside the house and having stiff clothes and towels. I have learned how to live without a dryer but it isn't a good thing. Also, having one bathroom does NOT cut it with four people. The bathroom might be an expensive repair however, might not happen right away. Sigh.
