SS is like happiness.....something we strive for, and have it in varying degrees from moment to moment and from day to day. Or it's like catching up with the laundry....an ongoing process!

I agree with freemotion, It's a process. I will never be 100% self sufficient. Actually I think life would suck if I was. I like having give and take with other people.

But I like learning to do things myself that I never thought I could do, and I'm always looking to make more out of my ever limited resources.

I think trading counts. We just, today, had an electrician (sp? Why don't they have spellcheck in these forums?) come in to fix a couple of things and my dh will be giving a massage in exchange. We trade massage for our haircuts, have for years. I also got my barn completely wired, over $1000 in savings, for MT for another electrician. I have traded for help with paperwork, home organizing, starting new gardens when my back was out. I traded painting for flooring with my dad.

I love a good barter!

I wish folks would trade for MT here!!! Heck, I can barely give them away, as the people here are so backwoods that they think there is something sexual about it!

When they find out you are a MT, they always say OH, how wonderful! When can you work on me? then, when you say I have such and such day open they get all sheepish. I asked one lady why she wouldn't come when I had offered her a free treatment for her neck pain. She said she didn't want me to see her without her clothes!!!! I told her we would work over her clothes or we can drape her with her bra on and she still wouldn't do it!

OR, you get the type that want you to work for free or really, really cheap because they think its just "rubbing on someone"! No deal! I work for what I'm worth or I won't work at all! :p

Bee, Yeah, I used to get that, back when I started out. It is so mainstream here now, and my work is so deep and specific (no fluff 'n' buff here!) that it is no longer a challenge. I haven't taken new clients in about 7 years. All my clients are on standing appointments now. It is nice!

In the barn aisles, when I am working on horses, I still get the "oh, I need it, too" with the pointing at a neck or back, and the expectant look (which means since it is just my hands, I should be able to give a little away now and then!) I just smile and say, "OK, take off all your clothes and get on the crossties! Do you prefer a twitch, or chemical restraint?" OK, all the horse people will be snickering at that one.....but it works!

I actually was at a party and a woman found out I was a LMT, and she got down on the floor in front of me as she was describing her pain! I made the hmmm, too bad noises while not budging from my seat. She got embarrassed, FINALLY, and got up. Sheesh! Good thing I was not a gynocologist! :ep

 Did you mean rub him down or is he really dirty and needs a hosing?

If you fly out this way I can put him to work, for sure!!! Neither of us can handle too many of the home improvement projects backing up around here! We can't afford to get callouses, anyways.....

 :th :th  You kill me, girl!!!

I had the exact same experience...but I did it! Here I was with my hand in someone's mouth working on her TMJ~while she is lying on the floor, while this party was going on around us!

Yeah, I definitely do the intense, pain relief deep tissue methods with my massage and very little of the fluff and buff, except maybe at the very end to smooth and soothe the area. That is real hard to explain to people who have never had it and only had the other kind.

Wish we lived closer together, free...I think we would have alot of the same styles. I had a clientele of around 50 regulars and about 100 total for the year I had my business...but I really blew at taking pitiful sob-story people's money...especially the oldsters! :p NOT a business minded gal...too much of a softy...dang it!!! I would LOVE to learn to work on horses or even watch it....it wouldn't fly here either but I'm still interested in it! :D
