Checked on the baby through the night. Around 3am she seemed to have her temp dropping a bit so I put the lamp I use for a brooder out there. She warmed very quickly (she was only a few degrees cool and as I said it's surface temp) and stood and tried to nurse. I can't say she was doing a GREAT job but she rooted well, found the teat and seemed to suck a few times, would drop it, find it again, etc a few times. She butted the udder at least once. Legs appeared to be close to normal but she's still walking slowly.

Right now she's lying out from under the light. She's a little bit cool again. Can't say about her legs or nursing as she's lying down. Her head is up and she moves her tail when mom muzzles her.

I'm calling the vets now in case anyone opens early and planning to pick up stuff to splint the feet in case it's needed.

Thanks. :)

Edited to add: I wish I'd thought to weigh her so I'd KNOW if she's nursing and how much

Sometimes if a doe's udder and teats are that big it's hard for the kids to get a good hold on the teat. Especially if there's only one - the mom is going to look as though she's bursting and the little kid only takes/needs about 2 oz every few hours for the first day or two.

I'm with Free - get her the BoSe. If, at worse case scenario, no one is getting back to you, some feed stores carry a Selenium paste but it's very harsh on their throats. I've never used it myself, but in a pinch it could come in handy.

Keep milking your doe as well and be sure to mark the date on the bag as to which day the milk is (day 1, day 2, etc) so you know the extent of the colostrum. It's easiest to freeze it in 2 - 3 oz baggies since that's about what kids need per feeding their first few days.

And on my way for BoSe. My lg animal vet sells by the dose (less than the gas for the drive) but if I go there I can make it to work this am. So that's what I'm doing next. :)

And thanks Glenolam! If she needs it, I have about 8 oz saved from yesterday's colostrum I can give her. Thanks!

Good luck! Keep us posted on how she's going.

Oh, and I forgot to say that if she moved away from the heat lamp last night it could very well be that she was actually too warm under it. Without taking her actual temp you can't be sure if she was cold and too weak to move under it or if she moved herself away because she was too warm.

And last check before leaving for vets (of course the guineas escaped and I had to move boy goats and llama so goslings could have their space) ...

She is warm, standing up trying to nurse again and doing a little better job, and the foot joints are straight, but very wobbly. BoSe can't hurt. Off to get it now finally. :)

Thanks again. :)

Vet gave me 1cc of selenium (hope it's BoSe) but wouldn't advise except he said he wouldn't repeat the dose. Said legs should clear up on their own anyway. I gave the doeling 1/2cc IM.

I got just 3ml of fresh colustrum in her after milking mom and getting about 12oz. I didn't milk mom out, but maybe 3/4 or more. One side was tight so I almost emptied that side. So far I've always seen kid nurse the other side.

Didn't see kid nurse again but she passed a mustard poop. She's peeing very regularly -- about every hour or two. Umbilical cord looks good. She actually RAN for a bit while I was gone and had to be chased, but now I look she's still wobbly and walking slowly and foot curled under. I have to go to work -- I have a goat sitter and may neighbor might come do the splint while I'm at work. If she still needs it when I come home (I get off in 4-5 hours) I'll do it then. She's just over 24 hours old.

I think that's it. Hanging in there. Got mom the dairy grain I used to feed lactating does last year.

Oh, and checked for dehydration in the kid and seems fine (skin snaps back). I would like to take moms temp (she took several hours to expel the placenta) but I can't find my thermometer. Can't imagine how it's not with all my other animal stuff.

Thanks again all. I think we're doing ok. Will hopefully improve. :)
