One of my 6 weeks old chicks crowed this morning when I let them out. So cute and little, like a party favor! Guess his name will need to be changed from Dianna, lol. Can't wait to see what he will look like all grown up. His silver feathers are amazing

You had a chick named Dianna?!! That is my name! (Except with only 1 n.) I say you should recycle the name for your next pullet.

And NOT name the cockerel after me, just cuz I called it!

We do, and will recycle it now for one of the chicks with a gender neutral name (likely #2) And I did take new pics, they are 6 weeks and numbered the same as before (I double checked, lol). Wanna guess sexes? #4 is Dianna- now Draco #5 is starting to get cheek tufts, and had a different comb than the rest looks more like a single comb and has even coloring no dark patches like boys can get who are blues and no color on the wattles.

Plenty of time for her to raise chicks right now. I can let them hatch to mid-November. I have let them in December-February before successfully, but I prefer not to have to worry about refreshing chick water multiple times a day because it freezes. Silkies are heat machines and sleep in piles so plenty of night time warmth and space because all the silkies let the chicks sleep under them at night. Nothing like lifting a rooster wing to find a chick.

None of my silkies really roost. Even the ones who like being up higher prefer a large flat area to clump together and snuggle. Like on the roof of the house instead of in it. There aren't as many in that pen now as I dispersed the teenagers to different pens.

I'm going to put some eggs from Ashes' pen in the incubator and give her the chicks. I'd like some more from him. Only one hatched last time. It's a cockerel but is nice looking.

We moved the BO and JG chickens out of the brooder room into the coop yesterday evening. The coop door opened this morning like it should. But the chickens stayed in the coop until evening. Then they came out into the yard. I went to check on them tonight, the coop door was close like it should but not a single chicken in the coop . Got Farm Babe and we wrangled all the chicken through the coop door and into the coop. Funny how buff orpingtons yell "help, help, help" when you grab them.

I guess they will figure out when it's light that means exit the coop, when the sun is going down that means get in the coop. I sure don't want to be wrangling chickens every evening. Farm Babe programed the the coop door work off the light sensor, sun up open door, sun down close the door.

Ok, here is what I see now:

#1, I couldn’t really tell before and I still can’t
#2, I wasn‘t sure before, but now I am sure, it’s a girl.
#3, Still a boy.
#4, Draco who crowed
#5, Thought she was a girl before, and I still do, but what is that dark patch on her wing? If it’s red, then it’s a boy. But you said there are no male dark patches, so it must be a girl.

The real clincher, besides crowing, will be when their saddle feathers come in. Then you will know for sure.

^^ this will be it! About 12 weeks right? #5- yeah no dark or red spots, might be a shadow she is light buttery yellow and silvery

No problem. 2 of each and 1 on the fence, sounds like a normal ratio now. I don’t know when saddle feathers come in. I would think before 12 weeks. But it probably depends on the individual chicken.
