OK, first thing to remember is, this was not written to any one church, but to a group of churches. V2 says to the churches of Galatia.

Secondly, Paul was not alone. If you read the intro to his other books, he will quite often mention others, like Timothy. However, in this book it just says the brethern who are w/me.

This type of greeting from Paul was typical. It's not unusual for him to lay down his credentials at the beginning of a letter.

V4 talks about the death of Christ, and the deliverance we have thru Him. This deliverance is important when you get to the rest of the book.

V6 he gets right into the heart of the problem, no beating around the bush, they're listening to things that aren't correct. In this case, it's the mingling of the law w/grace.

V8 and 9 are extremely important. They warn about the dangers of listening to anyone, even one who claims to be an angel, that preaches a different gospel. Paul says to let them be accursed. 1 Corinthians 11:14 and 15 talks about Satan appearing as an angel of light, as well as his ministers. 1 Kings 13:11-32 gives a story about what can happen when you listen to one that professes to have the word of God, but in actuality does not.

As long as we don't move to chapter 2 today, I'll add more later.

Is the plan to do a chapter a day? And we just make comment on what "stands out" to us on this particular reading of the book?
Yes that is the plan. Then come back and just discuss.

Can someone explain 'works' vs 'faith' to me as related to OT and NT?
I have heard this before but being new to the Bible, I really am not clear.. I am assuming it is behavior vs faith?

I always understood that works are the outward display of your belief. The way you live your life, treat others, that sort of thing.
Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for.

If Im not mistaken "works" have to do with following the Ten Commandments being a good person. I know what "faith" means but Im not sure how to explain it.

Works were required for salvation in the OT days as there was not a Redeemer to take our sins upon Himself. The act of sacrificing was the "works" that brought salvation. When Christ came, and died, He changed all of that.

NT works are no longer required for salvation. Salvation is through Christ. Works are required though, to show the love of Christ through you when you do works today. Our salvation now is through faith in Jesus Christ. Works are just an act of showing our faith in Him, and with the love of Christ...it comes pretty naturally :)

So to bring me up to speed here....(sorry if I am slow!)

Paul was saying (in part) that following the lengthy list of rules in the Jewish church had nothing to do with going to Heaven, that all that mattered is that one had Christ within. Would that be a fair observation?

If yes, then aren't the Ten Commandments rules for our religion? And are they not important to follow? I know that I can make foolish choices and break those commandments and ask God for forgiveness and set things right....perhaps that is the point?

Right, rules were just guidlines, not the way to salvation. The people were putting too much emphasis on the works, and not enough on faith. What matters is Christ, because He is the key to salvation. Without Him, their works would be in vain.

The 10 commandments are still important to this day. The whole point is to follow the Law as that is what brings us to Christ AND then we have to accept Christ. Christ is the key to the kingdom ;) Works are of this world, and will always be in this physical world. Show me how you can do spiritual works to/for someone else. You can lead a horse to water....but only Christ can make them drink :)
