To go along w/what Wannabe said, the first born also had obligations that the rest of the children didn't have. Upon the father's death, he became the head of the family. And as such, was responsible not only for the physical well being of the rest of the family, but also spiritually.
To add to that, and financially...to unwed sisters and his mother until death. I love the culture of that time and people group!!
Hmmm, there was also a deference to the man in that role, no? My youngers sister would have her head explode if she had to listen to me.
Yes there was, he became a "father figure" to the sisters. So yeah, she'd have been splodey

Sounds better than have your fate decided by having your children pick your nursing home. At least there was a system. Now it seems like every man for himself in many families.

Yes it does sound much better!! I adore the cultural ties they had to family, and wish it were still that way in my own. Then again, families were mostly SS then too and did not rely on government/welfare/society as a backup plan to bad financial situations, and the financial makeup of everything was much better in most cases, so needless to say a whole LOT would have to change! I'll be there in 5 years...SS and able to move more toward this lifestyle of choice..God willing ;)

Hey guys and gals! I just read chapter 5 of Galatians. This is by far my favorite chapter, very very rich and in detail.
Verse 13
But don't use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love
I love this verse! Very good!
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.
Another good verse!
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
I think these would be the characteristics of a true Christian, right?

Did everyone enjoy todays chapter?
