Rebbetzin
Almost Self-Reliant

That pretty much says it.... It is a way of respecting the Holy Name, even names used for the Holy One in other languages.Wannabefree said:I think I can answer that if I may. I was curious as well...she told me it is because the name of God should not be put on documents that can be destroyed such as deleting or burning of paper, but that it should be held more sacred. Is that about accurate Rebbetzin?
It is both a commandment, and a tradition. We are commanded not to use the Holy Name in a profane/common way. It is not to be used where the Holy Name would be crumpled up, thrown in the trash, stepped on, burned, etc. It is to be HOLY.Beekissed said:Is that somewhere in the Bible or just a personally held belief?
There are a few places where we are told to keep His Name Holy. Here are two of them. In English, at least when most of the English translations were made, "To profane" was not to use as a curse, but had more the meaning of "making common" as opposed to "special" or Holy.
Leviticus 19:12
12 And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your G_d: I am the L_RD.
Leviticus 22:32
32. You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel. I am the L_RD who sanctifies you,
and you notice The Holy One makes it personal, by ending the sentence with "I am the L_RD." That is His personal signature on a commandment. Anywhere you see that phrase, "I am the L_rd...." you better listen up. What He just said was important to Him.
