I hate health insurance but without it, I wouldn't be able to afford my son's seizure and meltdown-meds. Plus all of my own ailments. The fact that they dictate what meds we can use generics for, and which kind of generics, kinda ticks me off, especially since my migraines only respond to certain meds.

WZ: great explanation, as usual.

Is there any type of business that is really and truly honest and trustworthy across the board? I've yet to find any... not even charities or churches.

I see the insurance conversation has moved over here.

There used to be very low-pay, high deductible catastrophic care plans. They don't pay for the little stuff (doctor's appointments, prescriptions), but if you need surgery, chemo, or some other expensive treatment it's covered. I don't know whether those still exist; my jobs have covered my health insurance for a long time now so I haven't had to shop around in quite some time. It's a great option for folks who don't have other means of insurance or don't want to pay for a full-coverage plan.

I'll just agree with WifeZ's opinion on insurance and steer the conversation back to self sufficiency. I have back-up plans for my back-up plans, but just don't feel the need for insurance at this time in my life. Sorry to all you insurance salesmen out there, but you're barking up the wrong tree. Try used cars. If you got an electric model i'd be really interested.
In other news: i used my solar water heater as a solar oven yesterday, to heat up an MRE. It worked so well that today i'm heating up a can of corn. I'm too lazy to cook anything good today, so i decided to break into my SHTF stockpile. Canned corn, BPA tainted and probably GMO frankenfood. Fast food MY way. At least i'm using solar power to heat it up, so thats somewhat ss, right?

What is BPA in plastic-lined, canned foods? Read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A

Hubby and I both know insurance is just gambling in a thin disguise. You are betting you will get more in value from the insurance company than you pay in. But like a casino, the odds are in favor of the house. They rig the game so you get less than you pay in.

Super simplified, insurance is like going out to diner with a large group of friends. Some people order just a salad and a glass of iced tea. Others order lobster and a bottle of good wine. When the check comes, the people ordering lobster say "lets split the check evenly!". Then they can't understand why the people with the salad tell them to piss off. Then the waiter comes over and MANDATES you split the check evenly. So next time you all go out to diner, EVERYONE orders lobster and wine but still want to pay the lower amount they paid last time when a bunch of them only ate salad.

It's unsustainable.
The problem is, next time you go to dinner at a new restaurant, they see that you ordered lobster before, and tell you you have pre-existing good taste and have to pay triple for your lobster, no matter what you get.

One more thing. INSURANCE is NOT CARE. Having insurance does not guarantee care. Insurance isn't treatment.

AMEN and AMEN.
You get care from a physician. You get headaches from an insurance company (at least I do!)

I've been concerned about BPA for a couple of years but I've never found a notification on any canned goods I've ever bought. That's a reason that I don't like to jar-can things. I do dehydrate and place in jars but they don't touch the top. Found a BPA-free canning supplier (MERCK?) but they are so expensive. Maybe next year.

Oh, I didn't even think of the lining of the canning lids! I have tried to stop buying the plastic lined metal canned goods at the store- every kind of Bush's beans has the plastic lining the can- balck beans, chick peas, pintos, everything. Ugh. So now I buy the Goya brand beans- I think they are imported. So much for buying local!

SS- if your canned corn is old enough it might not be GMO :D

I was talking more about store bought cans with that plastic liner on all sides. But if we can bpa free lids for our home canning that's even better.
