Thanks to all of you. It feels good to unload on friends. I called my girlfriend a couple times this week but she has her own problems. Her dad passed away a couple months ago and her step mom fell off the wagon over the weekend. She has been sober for 7 years. Then her 11 yo son fell and broke his wrist. I didn't think I should burden her with more.

I guess I need to make a list for tomorrow.

eat chocolate, oh did I say that out loud? :duc

By the way, How many eggs is too many for a broody hen? Would 20 be pushing it. I know most wont be fertile so I figure when I candle them most will go. I guess I will play it by ear.

Thanks again, gina

I asked my dh three days ago, what do we need from the drug store? His list included some Lindt chocolate! Then today we stopped at a drug store for shampoo on sale for 50 cents/bottle. when I asked him what he needed.... he said "more Lindt!

I think it depends on it she is a first time broody. And it depends on the hen. You don't want so many that any will get chilled or not moved around. Our Jersey Black Giant hen never would sit on more than 16 eggs in a clutch at one time.

Go to Pepper Tree and get a vanilla soft serve cone dipped in chocolate or get a hot fudge sundae.

I had no idea where to post this so I put it in my journal.

So I have a broody hen sitting on a huge pile of eggs. Not sure what is going to happen. I tried to candle them the other day and can not see anything. They have been under her almost two weeks. Yes I know I need to weed out the bad ones but I can't figure it out. I am so afraid now if I go down there one will pop on me. not the first time.

I did a google search and saw the whole spider vein thing. The problem is I just don't want to make a mistake and huck a poor baby chick down hill. But again the egg that exploded on me last year was not so nice either.

The eggs I think that have the greatest chance of being fertile are my green ones. Which are almost impossible to see though.

Any suggestions. I think tonight when I go out for eggs I will take the flash light out again.

Oh by the way this coop has 11 hens. One was playing rooster the other day. Geesh, there is no rest for the weary.

Two weeks in, you should be able to shine down through the aircell and see the bottom of the egg 1/2 or more than 1/2 full with chick, and you should see movement. The area where the chick is should be dark.

Right before hatch, the egg should be so full of chick that you won't be able to see through it except for where the air sack is.

Hope that helps?
