August 18, 2009

Yesterday I smashed my left index finger in a door so typing has been a it troublesome.

I have spent the past week or so getting the kids ready for school. They will be attending the public school across the street from our home for the first time this year. DS who is going into 4th grade is a bit nervous and my DD who is 6 can't wait. The good thing is that several of his classmates from the private school are also starting public this year. With the economy and such private school is just not an option. I look forward to meeting new people who live in our neighborhood and walking to school.

I finished up the last of those heirloom tomatoes. Thank goodness. It's not so exciting doing canning for someone else. I did manage to freeze about 50 lbs for myself to process at a later date. The young man came and picked the sauce and jam up this past weekend. He said he will let me know how it goes. I am glad to be done with it. I had some girlfriends who just did not see the scenario the same as I did. They kinda gave me this whole spiel about how I should be handling the situation to make money for myself. I had to explain to them that my intentions from the beginning were not about money. They just did not get it.

I am thinking abut going to the farmers market and see what I can get along the lines of veggies. I need to get some in the freezer.

Not much happening in my garden. Trying to pull out the spent stuff and figure out what I can replant. I have come to realize that starting my veggies early is great but then they finish early as well. Next year I will need to stagger the plantings.

I picked up the special edition of Mother Earth Newsl last week. I hate spending 6 bucks on a magazine but it looked very interesting. It was the one that covered country Skills and self sufficiency. I wanted to use it as a sort of checklist for what I know and still should be learning. Two things I found very interesting and doable was the root cellar and goats for dairy articles. I was discussing the root cellar with dh and showing him the ideas they had in the magazine. He was very receptive. So I moved on to the goat article. He actually said we sure would save a bunch of money if we could produce our own dairy. Hes going to crack I know it. I have pulled him to the dark side. HE HE!!!!

Ds turned 9 last week. Wow how time flys. We went to diner for his b day and are supposed to have some kind of family (in laws) bbq this weekend. I am not sue thats going to happen. I have been behaving my self and not giving them too much grief. Even though I am still very angry with their choices. My dh seems to want to sweep the whole thing under a rug. I need to keep reminding him that things are not finished and their is still a chance we may need to sell the house and move. he gets grumpy about that. :idunno Just reality

Well got to get moving. Not so much excitement around here. Just the every day stuff.

Have a great day, gina

Gina, when do your kids have their first day? It will be good to get to know the kids who are closer and I am sure your son will settle in just fine :)

Couple of thoughts for you...skip preschool, it is overrated! My older three all attended and then I had to work from the time my little one was 1 until she was 2 1/2 (DH had a new struggling biz and so I got into real estate). When I finally quit working I felt so much guilt about leaving her that I decided to just have her stay home with me and pulled her out of school (daycare) then when we hit her pre-K year everyone asked if she was going to preschool...I just enjoyed spending time with her too much, so we decided to keep her home. We both had a great year having all of those day time hours together while the older kids were in school. I believe that was a better choice for her and I.

Good luck with the fam. I am sure it is harder for your husband to see the clear picture because it is his family after all. Sometimes our visions gets a little cloudy...it will clear over time I am sure!

Thanks Dace. School starts for us next Monday. I can't wait. :ya I know the pre school thing is so hard. My other two went and I feel my youngest would be missing out on all the fun. But we also sat down and calculated how much it cost per 3 hour day. And one of those days are mostly devoted to chapel. So it is really a waste of money. Besides she has two years before kindergarten, can you see I am leaning more towards keeping her home.

It will all work itself out. :)

My brother starts his first day of Grade 9 on September 1st. We just got his tentative semester 1 scheduale in the mail today, and by tentative they mean the class rooms could change not the order or teachers. He has English 1st period, Math 2nd period, Gym 3rd period, and Core French 4th period. He's so excited for high school, he's a little scared in the sense that his bestfriend is taking all college level classes and he has all university level classes except for geography.

I can't wait to see him off at the bus, I remember the day that my brother was born and he's grown up so much! ... Now... All we have to do is bring that stupid bus form in because he forgot to bring it in when he was in Grade 8 so now we have to go to Madoc to drop off his bus form and hope it gets sorted out or I'll have to drive him to school on the first day!

lupin....Sounds like a pretty good schedule for your brother. :D The bus thing sounds like a pain. How long is the bus ride from home to school? just wondering.

It's a 30-40 minute ride depending on road conditions and whether or not you get stuck behind a road grader. Kevin forgot to bring in his bus form and so we have to do hand one in next week for him to ensure he gets the bus on the first day.

Ok I have a gazillion things I could post today. But my main gripe is that is HOT!!!!

105 in the shade and I can't stand it! I refuse to turn on my ac because of the cost. I am going to go hide in my subterranean garage!!

This weather is not good. Next thing you know here in so Ca. we will be fighting wild fires again. Then the heat will cause the earth to contract and we will have another earthquake!!! Ugggg !!!!!!!

Oh I would love that heat right now! We had frost on the ground this morning, and I am very tempted to light a fire right now to take the chill out of the house...I'm freezing. I would love to trade you this for that! But I do understand your concerns with the wildfires.
On second thought, I have NEVER in my life been in temps over 90, and I find that temp *very* hot so I may not appreciate you sending me yours:>)

Ugh...hot is right!

I turned on the sprinkler already for the chickens. If I place it so that it sprays inside the run they seem to gather around it a bit. Not getting really wet, but they do seem to be cooling down.

I have the house closed up and have not yet turned on the AC, but I am going to as soon as I can not stand it.

When I was outside earlier I kept thinking I was smelling smoke, but I haven't seen any nor have I seen much on the news. Hopefully there will not be any fires in the next few days. :fl

Where else could you say that you're having a hard time deciding on sending your child to preschool or buy a goat? :gig Gosh, I love this forum.

My DS went to preschool for 2 years before kindergarten. He was soooo bored in kindergarten because he already knew everything they taught. I was working full time back then and didn't have a choice.

Glad you got your tomatoes done and sorry about your finger.

We are actually having some fall-like weather here in E. Tenn., very unusual. Highs for the next few days will be around 80. :weee
