hey guys!

i'm back with the lard info and the ill fated pig gut fire. as not to hijack Tank's journal i created a new post...

http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=80770#p80770

for your reading pleasure.

as for breeds and such - you really cant go wrong. mostly you can find the lighter skinned varieties and 'blue butts'... but this year we got some old school pigs - a tamworth and a tamworth x herford. about $50/pig is fair around here.

i was all excited about possibly getting a sow and raising them ourselves.... until we visited the guy's farm. that darn sow was as big as a rhino!! i nearly ran screaming directly out of his barnyard! heck no - 280lbs was big enough.. 600 pounds of stinky pig - no way, jose.

:)

Yup, it sounds like it is worth $100 for a couple of pigs NOT to have to care for a sow....and a boar!!! for a year in the hopes of a good litter. Even if she pays for her keep. I'd rather work outside the home and come up with the cash!

Free-range is not something I would ever do.

Who was that one guy who fed the remains of his victims to his pigs?

exactly why pigs are not dogs! you have no idea how many people told me that i'd just love love love them pigs b/c they were 'just like dogs.'

so i finally started explaining it this way:

if i fell down in the yard my dogs would think i was teasin' for a few minutes and start pawing around, then they'd get nervous and lay down beside me. when my man got home and didnt find me at the door he'd say to the dogs "where's momma" and they would take him right to me (they've done this before when i've been working out of ear shot).

pigs - on the other hand - if i fell down in their pen, they would eat me.

ick.

but free ranging is great. they are hogging down a field of poison ivy for us right now.

:)

and nope. i would never have a boar. i have a buddy that does AI so that was our big plan - until i saw how big they were. yikes!!!

I, personally, like pigs much better than dogs, and when you get tired of them you can eat them. Win-win either way. Well, not sure the pig, but still.

Our chickens would always have to be careful in the pig pen or else they could get swallowed or rolled on.

Ok so I found some hog panels on Craig's list. They are extra tall 52 inch by 16 ft and 32 bucks each. Graduating small to large at the top. I think thats a pretty good deal. No? My question is is that tall enough to contain a goat? In the future that is. Thinking dual purpose on the purchase. Just in case I chicken out on the pigs I could use them for goats.

What do you think? gina

My fence is 48" and I have a strand of electric at the top. It contains my goats, but I am making a higher fence for the buck. It should be plenty for the little guys.

thanks Farm fresh,

First off the nearest TSC is like way far from me. Like hours away. Second these are 52 inches tall for 32 dollars. The ones on line that were 48 inches were 47.77

that seems kinda good to me no?? do you think they will be tall enough to contain goats at 52 inches???

Yes Free and the goats I want are a Nubian / pygmy cross. On the small side. :D

G,

Looking back at your space, you don't have room for hogs/pigs, just the big ole back yard cliff thingie? I put that as a question because I don't know.

Although from time to time I often would like to swing a couple hogs above wind of certain folks, I know it is not practical.

That would be nice, but I'm not sure about goats either....

I don't remember any pasture land on your property, again I still don't remember.
