I don't which one of you guys owe me but you better send my $100 pronto. Couldn't sleep at all last night and finally got up for good at 5am and was out of coffee, so off to town I go. Decided to swing by walmart and check out the pressure cookers and ended up with a 16qt 15psi model and 5 pounds of test meats.

I have my arc flash suit for electrical explosions, my scba for caustic ammonia spills, a fire extinguisher at each of the kitchen doors, 2 pitbulls in case of food spills, but nothing for a pressure cooker explosion. I do have a full size replica Mark V diving helmet but weighs 50 pounds and the port holes are hard to see out off.

I should of just dug a root cellar that way if I died of a heart attack I would of been good to go.
   :weee

UM .... not ME! :hide

I do not do any canning in the house - it's outside on the propane turkey fryer stand. Don't have time to clean canning residue off my walls and ceilings.
I just opened my new canner and the first thing you see is a sheet of paper with a big fat warning and "Do not use pressure canner on any outdoor heat source such as a burner for a turkey fryer"

Well that was just my plan when I get to the new place - but in the instruction booklet it reads "Do not use on an outdoor LP gas burner or gas range over 12,000 BTU's"

All the turkey fryers I have looked at are in the 30-40,000 BTU range so someone must of put one on high and blew it up. I also see most gas stove top large burners are in the 12,000 btu range with smaller one being 6,000.

FYI, my new canner (a.k.a. The Silvery Pot of Asploding Death) does not have the same warning. It just says to be sure to regulate the "heat source" to ensure proper pressure. Not sure why there would be a difference.

I got brave and opened my new canner -- it doesn't look too intimidating. The instructions say the same thing about not using an outdoor LP gas burner or >12,000 BTU range. I don't understand why. I was hoping to be able to use it outside.

XPC.........you disappoint me. All this time I was under the impression that you were a manly kinda man. All that nearly free food must have scrambled your brain a bit, and made you forget the very first rule of manhood.
Let me refresh your memory..........
The very FIRST thing you do when beginning a new adventure or project, is to THROW AWAY THE INSTRUCTIONS! This also includes ANY warnings that may have been included with said instructions. Any guy with a valid man-card knows and lives by this rule. Tsk tsk tsk...... :pop

My calculations for a 2500 watt electric stove large element would only reach a maximum of 8500 BTU's so maybe you can't overheat too badly on those.

The one I just got has a wobble top vent and two additional pressure release devices.

You guys could always take the adrenaline ride of water bath canning everything! :D

Just opened and ate the chicken soup I water bath canned last year.....it was tasty and I didn't die. Go figure. :p
Every year some people win millions gambling and a few lose at the canning game. winners and losers, go figure~gd

Just call me a non-conforming conformist. Had I been in the presence of another male when I opened the box I would of immediately started a raging garbage fire with the instructions. Of course it would of been hidden along with all my other girly stuff like my nifty little sewing machine which was a lot cheaper than any future ex-wife.

I use to assemble and test 15,000,000 btu Maxon gas fired burners, the equivalent of 500 turkey fryers. I always got a kick out of the large envelope of instructions that came with the burner: "Before you try it your way, Please try ours first"
