Neither hubby nor I are smokers. Where we live smoking in public places has been illegal for several YEARS now. I personally enjoy my shopping and dining experiences FAR more without the second hand smoke, especially with my asthma. I do object to it being a LAW however across the board.

I think restaurants and other private business should have the option of being a smoking or non-smoking facility ... perhaps they should have to post it on their door.

We have had a couple of diners that for YEARS upon YEARS have catered to smokers. They have great food, but WE as diners could choose NOT to bring them our business and we didn't!

Public smoking IS a health hazard as are trans fats. This should require posting in a public place and full disclosure to the public. Loss of freedom is also VERY important! We need to make rules, like speed limits and building codes, for public safety. But do we need to tell the people WHERE they can do a historically LEGAL activity such as smoking? If the trans fats are so dangerous then why are they being manufactured and sold in the first place?

I too worry about the government quietly coming in and and stealing more and more of our rights. It is very concerning and I do not have much trust or faith in the gvernment as a whole.

We have had a smoking ban for years here, so it is funny more me to read you all talking about it :/

The big food manufacturers liked the trans fats because it doesn't show signs of age much. They can make huge batches and let them sit on the shelves much longer before it is obviously old.

Having to reformulate to other oils costs them $$$ too. There's the recipe development, the test batches, the market research, the promotions, the new packaging... And all those people want to get paid.
Then the public might buy enough to make a profit, or might buy your competitors version instead.
