I agree with the "sucking blood out of a rock" comment. I have two young relatives that have been on SSI for many years. In my opinion, neither one of them should ever have received any. They both just know how to work the system, and fake mental issues. Neither one of them has two pennies to rub together, but one of them has had five children (and has custody of none) and the other one just found out he has a third child somewhere (and all of them are on public assistance).
Frankly, I fear that when the silk hits the fan, they may come looking for me to bail them out with food, shelter, whatever. I would be concerned that they would be dangerous. There is no way that anyone could get one nickle out of either one of them. I think they are very representative of those who are receiving SSI.
Ahem....as one of the disabled collecting SSI, I have to speak up here. It isn't so easy to "fake" an illness and just start collecting SSI. My family has just endured extreme difficulty trying to wait for approval of my SSI benefits, which were granted to me, and I had to wait 7 months unpaid before I started receiving any money. What insurance could I have bought for myself would have made we wait so long and work so hard to prove I am truly disabled? I was sent to two doctors and they reviewed my records over the last 10 years. I had to answer innumerable dumb questions, wait in lines, and filled out more forms than I can count. It was a huge project and extremely HARD on a disabled person to accomplish. If not for my family, I would be HOMELESS from that wait.
Before you throw the baby out with the bathwater, check to see how you phrase things Tractor girl. I agree there are people receiving SSI who should not be. But to say that the folks you know as being very representative is a bit strong. I personally know several disabled people who have not been able to qualify despite them being disabled in MY opinion. So my experience could not be farther from what you are saying. Whenever you lump everyone together into one big group.....that is where you get yourself in trouble. Not all SSI recipients are created equal. And after you have paid into a system non voluntarily for 30 years and when you need it and receive it someone comes along and calls it an entitlement or that most people are fakers, well, it rubs ya the wrong way.

:hugs I've watched friends who are sick work for years in horrific pain because they could not convince the dr's, the government officials or anyone that they were deserving of that help. And then you have people like someone else I know who claimed he had a bad back and couldn't work, got on ssi, and then started doing roofing work, and pavement work, and that type of thing.

It is really kind of sad. The people who actually need it have a hard time getting it, and the people who don't need it seem to just have it handed to them. :smack

I've noticed that too. It seems easier for scammers to get on than those who actually need it. Not sure how that works.

At any rate I seem to still go back to the personal account idea or perhaps a "family" account. Perhaps people could decide who would be included in there account. That way I could draw back the SSI that I put in from working since I was 17 without people thinking I am a slacker drag on society. Let's face it some people, like my grandpa, my grandma, my mom, my MIL and my even hubby will probably never use up all of the money they have put in over their lifetime of working. It would be nice if their amount could be used by someone they chose.

Unfortunately, as much as this makes sense and I like it (I've been paying for a long time...), I know people who would say we're "being selfish"

Ironic as I read this, the ad on the bottom was apply for "social security disability" ... Should that even be something that is an advertisement????

That! Abi should qualify but doesn't. My son did get it but had to go through several exams. Then I have to keep sending in paperwork "Are you SURE he is still PDD?" (low functioning autism)

Umm...was there I cure I didn't hear about??? :gig

Anyway...if they stopped taking all those @@^%#!@ taxes out of my business, I would gladly give up Max's SSI.

I apologize to Savingdogs. It was not my intention to cast aspersion on your character, or what you have been going through.
I work in healthcare, and need to review patients' healthcare information as part of my job. I know that there are people, including those in my family, who are on social security, who shouldn't be. I am powerless to do anything about it. It's just the way the system works. I don't know why it isn't more difficult for the scammers to get on, but they seem to get away with it.
Again, my apologies to Savingdogs.

It is okay Tractor girl, I try not to take things personally. I find whenever I lump people into groups I get myself in trouble. I think you just did the same thing I've been guilty of in the past.

No group of people is all the same. I think on this forum, however, you tend to have independent, do-it-yourself types, used to doing things for themselves. So here at the forum I doubt many members are "faking" to be on SSI. In fact, I know for myself I should have been on disability MUCH earlier, but I did not want to admit I'm disabled. I know I am not the lone forum member in that position, either.
