thrift, or quality?

:yuckyuck

My Grandmother was Tahitian, raised in Hawaii....suffice it to say as a kid we saw a lot of Spam! Lucky for my she like to cook my fave foods for me ..fried chicken, so I got out of a lot of the spam eating, but they all loved it!

I just heard someone on the radio saying that spam with pesto on top was surprisingly good :sick

hee hee hee i love that you can to to McD's in hawaii and get some kind of spam thing

whoot!

Greatest redneck dish ever? Spam Salad Sandwiches. Grated Spam with mayo and sweet pickles, a dash of mustard, on white bread. Yummm-o. Good eats.

LOL 2dream
Or a can of "processed does not really taste anything like spaghetti" spaghetti. (For some reason I love the taste of it.)

Tony is the same way with certain flavors. He just loves them.

Me, I have my bad guys I love also....and I ain't giving them up..LOL

And to further prove that quality plays no role whatsoever in my diet: Ground smoked sausage mixed with Velveeta cheese, spread on a hoagie roll and broiled until bubbly.

(And to think I used to recognize the sundry fresh vegetables without a laminated guide sheet.)

I love Wendy Dewitt food storage program, its on youtube if you want to view it or you can print it off her website she lists on youtube. No I am not storing for religious reasons or the end of the world, just common sense preparedness for emergency situations.
SO that being said, I store what we will actually eat and yes I have some powdered milk (the best I have ever tasted) in storage for my milk drinkers and to be able to make pudding etc when you really need a boost from eating beans. :D
I will not just buy to buy, I buy what will get used and be rotated throughout the year.

If you're going to rotate your stored stuff, then it'd better be stuff you will be happy eating under normal circumstances :P

If you are trying to sock away long-term storables against catastrophe, or if you are realistically not likely to remember to rotate (eat the oldest stuff), then it probably makes more sense to store whatever offers your preferred optimum of high caloric content, high essential nutrients content, long shelf life, and low price. (Different people will want different tradeoffs between those things). And it doesn't matter so much whether it's something you like to eat -- since the premise is that if you have to tap into your stored stock it's because you are in a real bad situation and personal preferences take a back seat to survival.

So, like, personally I just try to make sure we have enough food of the types we normally eat to last us for a month or two around here (longer for some things, like I have an awful lot of jellies and jams <g>)... BUT if I were seriously preparing for a zombie apocalypse type SHTF scenario I would be squirreling away tubs of shortening and vitamin pills (among other things), which normally I do not want anything to do with but could come in Real Handy in times of starvation.

I'm heading into my third month of little or no grocery shopping. I did go to the store for some milk and bought some (shame on me) taco shells, shredded cheese and tomatos for tacos. I used my ground goat for the meat. It was soooooo good. But basically, I have been using things like stored pastas, canned tomato paste and spaghetti sauce, some canned and frozen fruit, etc to make my own stuff.
Luckily, I am still using apples and veggies from the garden to a large extent.
But no prepared foods (other than that canned spaghetti sauce- too much salt), bread, etc. I actually feel better for this- no more sugar highs.
I store things that I want to eat, and store well.
