Today is such a good day because I finally let my chickens out in the morning with my LGD together at the same time! Everything worked out without a hitch! Normally the chickens and ducks stay in their run until about 3:00. My dog keeps the yard secure until then and then comes in for a nap. The chickens get to get out from 3:00 until dusk, then we do the switch again.

I just didn't trust her not to harm them without a fence between them...until today!

She said, "I tried to tell you mom!!" in the look she gave me this morning when she camly lingered amongst the birds. :love

This dog has had a loooooong way to go since the day I picked her up from the St. Bernard rescue folks in TX. She was a 10 month old pup that was skin and bones. She was dumped off at a "high-kill shelter" near the gulf coast.

It took her about 1 year to finally bond with us but in the mean time she ran away, drug us down and across the yard, chewed up everything even the deck, got kicked out of 3 different dog parks b/c she was aggressive...the list goes on and on. We almost had to return her after 11 months of giving her our all. (If you knew us, you would know we NEVER give up either!!) Then one day something in her switched, like night and day. :ya

She has found her calling in life when we moved up here onto 5 acres. She let us know that she is loveable, but not a pet...she is a yard protector and that is that. A no frills, (now proven) genuine LGD!!!! I couldn't be happier!!! :celebrate

Photos are next! ETA photo:

(Her name is Kate as in Kate Moss b/c she was a tall bag of bones when we got her.) :love

That is wonderful news, BBH!

Titan, our Great Pyr, was a rescue dog too. We got him from Noah's Ark no kill shelter in Houston. I have a ton of pics of Titan surrounded by the sleeping or foraging flock! I'm looking forward to seeing pics of Kate at work... :D

What a face! :D

I wish I had a dog I could trust to take care of my flock.

I don't know why, but I was on Petfinder today and saw a female collie/pyrenees mix that is in a shelter almost 2 hours from me. Soooo tempting! Sounds like a wonderful combo. I loved our collie that we had for many years.

Beautiful dog! I got my Black lab/greyhound mix Layla from the pound the day before they were going to put her down. I was not there for a dog..went with a girlfriend who was taking lunch to her DH. And Layla was out running and then came and sat down next to me and leaned on me, looking up at me. Well, needless to say..she came home with me the next day.
I found Pig (beagle mix) when he was about 5 weeks old when I went to the cemetary to take some flowers. He was laying down by the headstone of the family friend I was taking the flowers to. After asking the office if they knew where he came from, they were getting ready to call animal control to come get him and I brought him home.
They are very good around my chicks. :love And I could not imagine life without them!

I am pretty sure she would have been put to sleep if it weren't for us. She was the hardest nut I've ever had to crack, this is why mile marker is SOOO important. We have about 1 1/2 years invested in that pup and it wasn't until recently that we got anything (even a lick) in return.

I would love to see photos of your LGDs!

What a sweetie!
The large breeds are babies for such a long time.

My 2 year old golden can walk among the chickens now. She calmly follows them watching for poop, sigh.
If one gets loose I can point the bird to her to herd it towards me. She finds the hidden eggs in weeds and brings them to me without breaking.

My dogs love chicken poop too. Why? Is it bad for them?:sick
