I had the same problem of too many eggs when my first hens started laying. Of course, silly me, I got Leghorns the first time....little egg machines! I had a huge list of people who wanted them, then I found out they figured it would be cheaper than Costco eggs....at the time, $0.69 per dozen....NOT! You know it costs more to keep hens cruelty-free!

So I started educating these people with e-mails, two or three paragraphs at a time, to explain why they needed to be more expensive, but you get what you pay for. I got some info from the MEN site on the nutritional value of pastured hens' eggs, and from www.westionapricefoundation.org. I talked about the cruelty of battery hens and that it is done that way for money, and that is something I could no longer knowingly support. Etc, etc, etc.

By the second or third e-mail, justifying $3 per dozen, I had a waiting list. And I would NEVER deliver eggs. The sit in a cooler on the porch after someone e-mails me, and they pick them up and leave the three bucks in the cooler. One lady wants to be on the top of the list, so she gives me $4. Yup, that puts her on the top of the list. If someone is willing to pay more out of appreciation for the cruelty-free factor, I am willing to support that!

I hope this helps! And there is no sign, so no one knows.

Thanks free - I'll try some education. I had to take the sign down because the insurance company was going to cancel my insurance because they considered it
:smack idiots.

OK - I have moved the roosters - my favorite barred rock and a beautiful light brahma - and hens I definitly want to keep - 4 of my barred rocks, 4 of my brown leghorns and my 4 mutt banty hens plus the one mixed biddy that hatched. I pulled down the wire that seperated two pens and doubled the size.

I moved the others - 1 barred rock rooster and 5 hens and 1 brown leghorn rooster and 5 hens - to my other pen.

I moved my turkey into the smaller of my pens for now - you should have seen him scratching and wallerin in that dirt. He's in turkey heaven.

Once dh gets up (he's back on midnight shift so he sleeps to 2 or 3 now) I'll try to get some pics uploaded.

I was finally able to get some pics uploaded :ya Now let's see if I can put them here :)

I shuffled chickens around a couple of weeks ago, turned my guineas loose, moved my turkey to an outside pen.
here's a pic of some of my guineas - they love to follow me around yelled for food when I am out near the pens.

Here's my turkey when he was first outside - he was scratching and flopping around in the dirt like he was in turkey heaven

This is my big baby of rooster - I think he is really pretty

and this is what happens when you put 2 roosters who have not been together since they were babies in the same pen

Here's a pic of my cornishXs from last week - I swear they would eat 24 - 7 if I could afford it!! They are about a month old now.

My youngest brother got married this past weekend - this is me and my Mom with him and his new bride:

and this is the grooms cake he asked me to make:
62_dscf4430.jpg

he brought me a picture of one and I made it for him - I really like to do that kind of thing too bad I can't figure out how to make a living at it.

Oh - I think I may finally have a couple of regular customers for my eggs - I have cleaned out my overstock and the girl wants more next week :celebrate

A funny side note - the lady that drove the horse carraige for my brother's wedding just raved about my deviled eggs - she called me Monday and wanted to pay me to make her some! Of course I did! She apparently goes to some kind of horse people meetings pretty regularly and says she'll have me make eggs for her everytime :celebrate

Life is good . . .

Wonderful pics!

Is your turkey a Royal Palm? He looks very pleased!

My guineas have just recently gained access to the yard as well, by their own accord though  They just fly out of the run when they want out. I'm pleased this time around, though, as the 6 guineas we have now go back to roost in the coop on their own! When we had guineas 2 years ago, they always wanted to roost in the trees and never in the coop. :p

Yes- he is a royal palm - I had 4 to begin with but learned the hard way how much more fragile turkeys are than the other birds :( I love the look of royal palms.

My guineas roost on top of the chicken pens so that is good for me. My Mom & Dad's roost in a pecan tree in the back yard. They have this routine that they all follow to get to the same spot on the same limb everynight - it is really cute to watch.

I am tired!! We are having dinner for my Mom's birthday tonight so I have spent most of the day cooking and cleaning.

I had a lady call me about the CL add I posted to sell my brown leghorn roo and 5 of his ladies. She came about 1 to pick them up :woot

While I was catching chickens for her 2 of my leghorn hens escaped and are now running around the woods - so far I haven't been able to get them back in the pen. Maybe when I take their bread out later they'll come to me - it's their favorite treat.

Love the pics.

You do have that recipe for deviled eggs posted in the recipe section don't you? :D

Funny thing about those deviled eggs. I make them and people eat them and say nothing. My mom makes them (using the exact same ingredients) and people rave about how good they are.

She taught me how. I stand and watch her do it. I don't know.:(
