My hens have finally started paying for their feed - I actually had to tell someone this week that I did not have eggs left to sell There is one lady that has become a weekly customer and wants 8 - 12 dozen at a time. If she keeps being a regular customer I may only sell to her cause that will take most of my eggs!!
I am going to have do something with my BR roo - the one that was fighting with the light brahma in the pics. He will not let the other roo eat and chases him back to the roost all day long. It is causing a lot of stress in the pen. He is a really pretty boy, but I want to keep the light brahma and I do have another (not as pretty) barred rock roo.
I think today I'll create a bachelor tractor and move this roo until I decide what to do - one of the girls I work with may take him cause her old roo died a couple months ago - at least I'd know he had a good home
Bee - She's got all her friends wanting my eggs hopefully she is just collecting money from them to pay me. As long as she is buying enough from me to pay for the feed I'm good
I built the bachelor pad for my BR roo out of 2 picket fence panels and some scrap wood, it's pretty cute.
I originally had 2 coops/runs and the roosts were along side the nest boxes and the top nest was always full of poop Since I now have 1 large coop/run I moved all the nest boxes to one side of the coop and re did the roosts. Hopefully they will quit using the top nest box which is now lower for a toilet
Everything seems more peaceful without the BR roo - the light brahma has been on the ground enjoying himself without being chased back to the roost!!
Her name is Madusa - my son loves monster trucks so she is named after the Madusa monster truck which stands for made in the usa - She is a full blooded American Bulldog. She was 4 months old last Friday. The guy that breeds them had to have surgery and his wife can't handle taking care of the puppies so he told my Mom -who works at the vets office - that he would be willing to give away the last 3 puppies to good homes. Of course Mom called me and ta da I have a puppy that is as big as my 1year old shepherd mix!!
On a sad note - I believe I had my first predator attack this week. I had put my BR Roo in a pen by himself and when I went out to feed Monday he was dead. Something - my guess a coon - had dug under the side of the pen and his head was gone. Sucks cause he was a beautiful rooster.
I processed my cornish rocks last weekend (10) and this weekend (13) - we cooked one last week and man was it good ! At least I'm done feeding those pigs for a while.
My hens are not paying for their food at the moment - molting and the weather I guess
Last night while I was on my back porch I heard something walking around in the woods at the back of the yard - normally I hear deer so I got up to see if I could spot it. Out where we did the chickens I saw something move - too big for a fox, my guess is coyote or wild dog. I watched for a couple of minutes and it went back into the woods - I heard some yipping so I don't know if it has pups or more adults were there. I went in and got the 9mm and came back out - my gs mix knew something was there because she began to growl and run out there. I didn't let her go since I wasn't sure if there was a pack and plus I couldn't have shot if she had been there - didn't see them again last night.
DH called a few minutes ago - he works midnights and when he got home a little after 8 this morning he let our GS mix outside and he said she went straight to the woods barking and raising cain and he looked out in time to see something running away - still ain't sure what it is, but I am super proud of that dog
My boys have an orchestra concert tonight - 1st one for my middle. The oldest gets to perform a guitar duet during the concert - should be a fun night.
We'll be going to the fair Thursday night - if this storm doesn't do much damange I hope to make a contact to get a buddy for my poor lonely royal palm turkey.
We have tons of coyotes here and see them frequently. I hate those sneaky nasty things. One got one of my chickens. Totally my fault for letting the girls out so early in the morning, but this is all new to me so I guess it was just a lesson, learned the hard way.
I hope you don't have any trouble with them.
That pic of your new pup is adorable! How is he doing?
We've been here 2 years next month and have only seen them the 1 time - heard them alot, so hopefully they'll stay away.
Thanks she is really cute - she's great, but at the moment she isn't feeling well. You know how puppies like to chew? Well she doesn't just chew she eats A few days ago she started throwing up and not eating, she's been to the vet, but I think I'm taking her back tomorrow. They said if she didn't get better they woudl do a scan and see if she had a blockages. She still isn't quite herself - she's not eating.
