Good to hear it packed up and left. Ours moved to the neighbor's house :p I can't believe how much stuff comes into our yard - the fenced yard - at night!

That sounds like a fun auction! I haven't gone to a farm auction in a long time. Sounds like you got some great deals!

yeah, my dd and her fiance liked the stuff I got so much they begged me to take them to an auction, so today they are coming up from the city and we're heading out to another auction.

trouble is, he has a BIG truck, and that means the sky's the limit for what you come home with. And there is the sweetest 50 year old baby blue small dump truck that ohhhh, I want. not that that would fit in the truck!

went to let the chickens out this am and they refused to come out! went into the coop, they are all up on the roosts raising a fuss. I thought, huh, maybe rats? never seen one here, but somethings up. Nope, can't see any critters inside the coop.

went outside, they still refused to come out. They are eyeballing out the windows. I'm looking and looking, and then.... I find a huge pile of scat. and what looks like a few holes dug...I'm thinking skunk. I searched the pen area, looking under the pines, under the blackberry brambles (yeah, I know I've got to get them out of there), walked the fence line, - didn't see any critter. But the pen is big enough that You can't see it all from one vantage point what with the pines and scrub.

After telling them I think there is an all clear, they reluctantly came out. Makes me nervous, I sure as sh*t hope I didn't miss a skunk or coon in the trees or brush.

dang. now I am bit to pieces, and nervous. I don't have the electric wire on because these hens stick their heads out to the wire for no good reason.

shoot. keep your fingers crossed that I come home from the auction to happy hens!

thats it! I can not go to any more auctions. I spent way toooo much money.

Chickens survived the day, and at the auction I bought a couple of rolls of 12" high chicken wire, so I can put chicken wire inside the fence - this will prevent them from sticking their heads through the fence, hitting the electric wire and getting shocked. THat means, I can turn the electric fence on again, which should take care of any critters coming into the pen.

Here's what I bought at the auction: (notice, no baby blue dump truck)
- dozen half pint canning jars
- big box of misc canning jars
- best find: 4 dozen, never used, zinc screw caps for canning jars!!
- cookie tin full of buttons, lots of bakelite, etc for only $12
- couple old rakes: take the heads off, use them for hanging racks on the wall for jackets, hats, scarves, jewelry, kitchen tools, etc -
- 5' stock tank, excellent condition for $30
- more rag rugs
- wooden box
- plaster nativity characters, good shape, vintage, (sheep and angels especially sweet) - I havent' looked through it all yet to see if there is a baby jesus or not in the set.
- 12" rolls of chicken wire

It was a funny auction - the owner was an 85 year old woman still living in the house, apparently her husband recently passed and she was clearing out farm equip, tools, and her kids were trying to get her to downsize. All through the auction she would come out with something to add: an antique table, a set of dishes, a van! it was pretty sweet. She spent alot of time talking to people about what they bought. Auctioneer was very patient with her, even when she changed her mind about something and retrieved it from the hay wagon.

house is a pit. today means: cleaning, laundry, making eggplant parmesan, roasting tomatoes, and ironing enough shirts for the work week. maybe getting to the chicken wire in the pen.

I love fall!

oh oh oh, I forgot the surprise auction buy: an old working bee smoker and veil for $2

I really want to get bees, and hope to do it this spring if I can get the smaller hive set ups so I'm not slogging 70 pound supers.

bees! they would pollinate my blackberries! raspberries! and honey would be a bonus.

Will the chicken wire really keep the chickens from sticking their head through and reaching the hot wire? If so great! If not you may be installing a chicken killer. The chicken wire works as a better ground than the earth, If not fried outright the the bird is likely to panic with the wire around its neck. I had that problem with ducks, I don't keep chickens so I don't know.
