Wow, what a tough day!

I hope that the skunk moves out (maybe you should try a rap station?) and that you get the mice all caught!

day off started with two good friends over for wild blackberry cobbler for breakfast, hot out of the oven, with ice cream, of course.

that chicken with the problem? she had a prolapsed vent, I tried helping her this morning with a warm water bath and with popping it back in but back it came with an additional sac, and she started hemoragghing so I had to put her down. I'm guessing it was brought on by a calcium deficiency because I had a hen with soft shelled eggs a couple of weeks back, although I've added oyster shell to the coop (they should have gotten enough calcium from all the greens in the chicken yard).

Last night I set a snap trap for the mice on the counter by the stove - put paper down, then the trap loaded with peanut butter, and do you know? those mice ate all the pb but the trap didn't spring. I got a wooden match and barely touched the trip, and it snapped shut. hmmm.

while I was looking at the moon last night, got to hear a long chorus of coyote howls - multiple howlers and singers.

its starting to rain, and i think that means its time for a nap on the porch.

hey javamama, is your growing season done that you are pulling your tomato plants? I'm just rolling into harvest now.

and Dace, if I tried I rap station, I would be the one moving out!

We've had so much rain and heat that the tomatoes got off to a bad start and couldn't recover. I think it was early blight, but there may have been bacterial spot and other stuff going on. Then I discovered the stink bugs feeding and it was all over for me. I can usually get tomatoes until October unless we get a freakishly early hard frost.
I hope yours do well. Ohio weather has been the pits this summer for gardens.

yeah, I've had an awful lot of blossom end rot which I've never had before on the tomatoes. I think it has been so wet - the green beans are limp with too much water too.

I have an apple tree that is just a few years old and its leaves are all yellowed, I think it is drowning.

definitely a strange summer for the garden, but good for the garlic and potatoes, I think.

lala- We had the yellowing of the fruit trees leaves this spring and it turned out to be fungal rust and may have killed them. We didn't treat with copper sulfate early enough (the other stuff I won't use because it has been linked to killing bees but I can't think of the name of it).

I put egg shells in the tomatoe holes when I planted them and also around them and didn't get blossom end rot this year. Provides enough calcium to prevent blossom end rot?

Newmochick, at what point to you spray with the copper? I try to spray before the buds come up but missed this year. My neighbor says spray at any time it does not matter. What do you think?

Tanks- we were late this year as well (didn't know to do it ).

My garden supply store said before anything blooms. When we figured out the problem, they said to spray now (this was in July) and spray again 2 weeks later. Have to spray below 80 degrees which was a challenge here in July. I would think you could spray now than again 2 weeks later. We lost all of our small crop this year but hopefully our young trees will come back.

Gina, the blackberry cobbler was so good for breakfast that tonight I'm having it for supper!

half my cupboards are out on the table and counter because of chasing mice. when I catch them in a trap, I introduce them to the cats. One of the cats is starting to get interested....never ever thought I'ld have to train a danged cat to hunt.

better start earning her living!

newmo, I've never heard of eggshells and tomatoes...I might just try that.

I made a cherry cobbler last week for my sons b day. I am ashamed to say it would have never made it through 3 meals. With 5 of us it barley lasted through the first go around.

Yeah the fruit trees are tricky. My neighbor, the old wise German man, told me you could spray the trees any time. He said they spray grapes directly to prevent issues. I did not like the idea of spraying the fruit so I skipped it this year. I have 3 trees that are fighting this curly leaf thing. The nectarine managed to set a huge amount of fruit regardless. My peach has been struggling for years. I baby that darn thing so much. I feel like chopping it down.

Every year I learn something new with those trees. Pruning is the worst.

But I kkep trying!!
