Oh, I am so glad you mentioned basil. That is what I have to go out and harvest right now. We are do for our first rain, and I want to get it in to dry.

Your list looks a lot like mine. Though I am getting ready for a first rain, not nasty coldness. And our tomatoes have barely started, nor has my eggplant done anything so far
It has been a weird gardening year.....

I still cry occasionally over my little Butika, my house chicken. She was my buddy for less than a year. But we were inseperable during that time. She slept on my shoulder at night. I loved coming home to hear her pitter patter run across the floor to see me.

with the frost warnings, i hurried and did a last minute harvest. I have a bushel basket of basil in the sink, more in the frig, and harvested veggies all over the place.

also have grasshoppers, spiders, and caterpillars that came in with the basil - I think it is so cold outside the hoppers didn't hop off until they warmed up in the house. it is just unnerving to walk across your room with grasshoppers jumping. just aint right!

I was hurrying, the moon was up, it was getting dark, and I thought I would take a last bouquet of zinnias in, and i must have thought my finger was the stem because I cut it with the scissors pretty good.

blood everywhere - a trail all the way from the door to the sink to the medicine cabinet- on the walls, floors, rugs, cabinets, looked like a horror film.

took a while, but i got the bleeding to stop finally, and i've got a load of rugs in the wash - next load will be bloody clothes and towels, and then I am going to bed. that basil will have to wait til tomorrow.

now that I am sitting down iit is starting to hurt like the dickens.....

wow i am a wimp !

Sorry about your kitty. It's really hard to go through. I still miss my girl and she's been gone a year. Your other kitties are grieving too, so maybe you can all comfort each other. (((((HUG)))))
Fingers have lots of nerve endings- nothing wimpy about that. Hope it heals up fast.

FROST.... id kill for frost right now!!! All the crops have burned up months ago and only had 4 count them 4 small showers all summer, no real rain to speak of and the heat has been freaking horrendous this summer. heat indexes in the 100+ nearly all summer and tomorrows high is supposed to be 99 not heat index but the mean temp. So id kill for frost right now at least it would be a break from this HEAT!! :somad It was so hot and dry that the okra died a month ago and i have never seen that happen ever.

No frost! In fact, clouds moved in and it is a warm and sultry 42 degrees this am.

dang. I would have left that basil til the traditional pesto making day -

which involves lots of food processors, pine nuts everywhere, garlic from the garden, and teeny tiny canning jars, plus GOOD olive oil, not the make-do stuff that is so costly at the local grocery - my sisters and I make pesto for the year and freeze it.

Pesto day is supposed to be NEXT week.

always a gamble when you have to rely on weather predictions.

oh well.

my finger bled a bit during the night, and I am ashamed to say that my SS skills are sorely lacking as I had insufficient first aid supplies of massive amounts of gauze.

so now sheets get added to the laundry pile.

I seem to be going backwards on my to do list here.

after pesto, I have to make two chocolate cakes, one for my neighbor who trade cake for window repair on the coop yesterday, and one for a traditional lesbian potluck at another neighbor's this afternoon.

I normally make layer cakes because they look so great, but being one handed I think I'll go for the 9x13 pans instead.

must need some coffee.

ginger is calmer this morning so my thoughts of running out to find a kitty to distract her and myself are on hold.

oh no! about your finger - careful with that! yikes!

you know - you can always use duct tape in a pinch. use whatever you got over the wound and then bind it up.
;-)

glad that Ginger has calmed down. she might see her self as the center of attention now and may just enjoy it.

glad you didnt freeze! i gotta do something with my basil also. not a pesto fan so i think i'm gonna just chop up and freeze in ice cube trays.

hope you have a better day!

firem3, where in the heck are you? that heat sounds just horrid.

do you think it is part of global warming? up here they are having a big planning session with the local, city and state gov planning folks to start considering how to adapt to the changes. Some surprising ones to me, like how will the water treatment plants cope with water shortages? and how will the natural resources folks decide which native fish species to give up on, and which ones to support artificially?

OFG, I am shocked, just shocked, that a food goddess like yourslef doesn't like pesto. do you like basil and tomato and goat cheese toasted sandwiches?

yup, duct tape and super glue are great first aid kit items. I've read that the vet super glue is cheaper than the people medical super glue, but I just go foe the hardware store superglue. haven't glued my finger because I am scared to look that closely :/

(sitting down with a second cup of coffee to avoid the basil mountain)

traditional lesbian potluck ....made me giggle.

basil and tomato and goat cheese toasted sandwiches? ...made me hungry!

I am worried about your finger girl, if it is still leaky it may have needed a stitch or two. Be sure that you are generous with the antiseptic, you don't want it getting infected!

im in north central Alabama, on top of Owens Mountain. you'd think i was exaggerating but i'm not. the rains would come up to our area and then just split and go down the valleys on either side of us, we planted 5# of purplehull peas in august and they just sat in the ground and burned up. Thank the Lord above that we don't have to survive on the garden food yet.
