I've got my first broody duck right now. new experience here. I'm not sure when she started sitting on the eggs. Maybe two weeks ago now? We could become ducky grandmas around the same time!

I usually force mine out of broodiness James, so yeah, the first ones I have "allowed" to continue their broodiness. I usually break them waayyyyy before they get serious, but this one....she meant business from the get go. :hu

EVERY. FRAKIN. DAY. Seriously :/ It can be SOOO annoying trying to get eggs. I was tired and busy the other day when Buffy was hiding hers in a dark corner of the coop. It only took 24 hours for her to get that serious and start whoopin the roo even for getting too close

I wish mine were that eager.......I should get some broodies next spring though. With these being older hens and already been broody. I will be hatching pure buffs next year and maybe turkeys under them if I find a local breeder.

I don't think i'll like broodies. It cuts down egg production too much.

Not to argue but I really dont see how. I mean I know she wont be laying. But I dont think it will make a big dent in egg production. I personally like them because thats money on birds you dont have to spend and its more SS.

It's why I keep a bator. I prefer retaining control of when/how many chickens I have. I also prefer to get eggs. I only have 8 hens laying right now, and 4 ducks, so supposed to be getting 12 eggs a day, but cut down to 8 because a couple hens are "sharing" their eggs with those two at the moment. They are sitting on everybody's eggs  Then the fact that I won't get any from either of them for 3 weeks on the hen and 5 weeks on the duck...that adds up to a lot of eggs!!! I am putting eggs up for winter, and want to make sure I get enough frozen before they slow down production! So...either way is SS really for as long as there is electricity available, then I have breeds who WILL brood if I ever need that option :hu Bator is a win/win IMO.
