I love working on cars, although I admit, I'm much better at diagnosing the problem than fixing it! My brother made me do all my own repairs (with his supervision). Once he let me tear down an engine, so I could see what all the pieces and parts looked like - big mistake, we never did find all the pieces
:yuckyuck I self taught. Nothing better than sitting in the gravel with a greasy Haynes manual and a glass of iced tea :D

I helped take an engine out of an Impala and putting it into a GMC truck as a pre-teen. I learned by watching that beer, tools, and engines don't always mix well. think of J. Cash's "one piece at a time" - like the holes didn't line up....

I'm always sober  Beer and stuff don't mix well with grease and tools and trying to follow instructions :p I've actually done a whole lot of work on vehicles, and driven some really rattle traps. Poor=work on your own car or walk

Me too! There's a funny story about me and diagnosing an old car. Dh and his daddy were working on an old carbeurated vehicle that had quit running. Well that year mud dobbers were REALLY bad. They were everywhere! They were building nests on everything and I was constantly scraping them off the side of the house, and I had been leaving the door open and they got in the house. I was so sick of them! Anyway they couldn't figure out what was wrong with the car. I was out there helping them. They had left the breather off. Well I told his daddy it was mud dobbers in the carbeurator. They laughed at me. I argued with them that's what it was, and they just laughed even more like I was stupid. So I left. I told Dhs mother what I thought it was and that they'd laughed at me. They got the car running that day. That evening we were at his parents house and I asked what ended up being wrong with the car. Neither one would answer. His momma was about to fall out of the chair laughing. She made his daddy tell me what was wrong. A mud dauber had stopped up the carburetor!

Back in the day, it was easier. Now with all the computer stuff not any more, remember my tractor? Control module was the culprit. I actually did replace all of the other possible parts myself.

Yeah i hate the computer stuff but the WORST is the little tiny foreign cars that you have to have skinny arms to get to what you need to get to. i hate the compact crap they toss out today. I like to be able to get under the hood and have some breathing room. The older cars you could get in there and really get into it. You could build a small home under the hoods of some of the old cars  I love working on the big old classics. That's how my Comet was. I replaced so many parts on that thing....

Car bodies last a lot longer down your way as opposed to up here. Bodies rust out so more quickly

Yeah my current car is from NY and we need to get the brake lines replaced soon. The road salt is SO corrosive!

I have worked on cars B4, but hate it! I figure I have a son that's a mechanic, as well as a hubby that knows how to work on them. So, I'll let THEM work on the vehicles. Well, anything that HAS to be done gets done, but I've been waiting for over a year for them to replace my leaky radiator. If it's not done soon, I'm going to tell them I'm going to do it myself. That's how I've gotten other things done. Once I say I'm doing it myself, they'll do it.
