I agree with you FarmerChick. I used to live near an airbase and got a huge kick out of the C130s, A-10s, Huey helicopters etc that were always buzzing around. I wish we could show that stuff without it being such a cost. If the US was living high on the hog right now, it would be great, but we're not.

Oh well!

There are a lot of things going that most of never even think of. I will grant that maybe it could have been less expensive but consider a few things. Cavet here, I don't know all the particulars. I'm just throwing some things out there.

Superbowl on a weekend--maybe this was a reserve or national guard unit. The pilots need to fly to maintain proficiency and qualify for flight pay. They have to get a certain amount of hours.

Good public relations--fighter jets are exciting to lots of people, especially sports fans.

So we are paying for it whether they fly around in circles over Virginia or fly to Texas and back.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I HATE to have planes fly low over me. It takes me back to 9/11.

We live under one of the routes used by the Ohio Air National Guard for training for low-level ops at the nearby old Army artillery arsenal. The C-130's fly so low some days you can see the sunglasses on the pilots. During our first month living in this house, a flight of four Apaches flew up the valley at treetop level. Mondo Sweeeeett!

It costs a lot to run this country, I sure a little digging could find equally disturbing examples of waste and fraud in a lot of other places

I have a lot of AF vets in the family. Those flyovers are a source of pride for them.
We get the low level flights too (western Columbiana Co.). Most of ours are the big transports and there will be several in a line. We also have helicopters flying the power line over our property but they are commercial not military. Copters drive the dogs nuts but the dogs aren't too bothered by the transports.

Myself,.. I watched the Superbowl and thought the flyover was a great addition. I took it as being an American pride thing,...military jets and football,....kinda like baseball and apple pie. What?.. our country wasting money??? Are you kidding?? I believe this is just the cream on top of the waste our country does,... I believe I would find something else to rant about. ;)

Actually,..who cares about the jets,..did ya'll see SAM ELLIOT???? :drool

While I have enjoyed flyovers I have seen in the past, during economic struggle it seems a bit wasteful unless it is truly a training exercise, which I somewhat doubt.

I lived near an airport for many years of my life. My most terrifying experience was when a pilot mistook a new freeway offramp (near our house) for a runway and almost landed on our apartment building. Grown men wet their pants, it terrified us all. I actually threw my body over my infant son to protect him, thinking the end had come for us.

Fortunately the pilot pulled up at the last minute. We moved a few months later. I have NEVER enjoyed seeing a plane in the sky since that day and you could not PAY me to go watch an airshow. I have seen on the news times where the Blue Angels had accidents. My dad (who is passed away) worked on the planes for the blue angels when he was working, so I have always been attentive to their events. But air show accidents HAPPEN.

But beyond those personal feelings I have about it, I think our country needs to rethink a lot of optional spending they are doing right now and stop printing so much money. Now if our military folks really need practice, I guess the folks at the superbowl should help PAY for the gas and expense it took to add that feature to their show. I bet they paid Christina Aguilara for that horrible version of the Star Spangled Banner that I heard all about. I can't hear but Hubby who is tone-deaf was covering his ears.

Is that who that was "singing" the Star Spangled Banner??? I thought it was a cat squalling. It was awful,..as was the half-time show, IMO that is.
